A little background: The former Navy/Northrop Grumman facility in Calverton NY was given up by the Navy back in the late 90s. I worked there for 15 years. Since then, there have been many proposals, and just as many failures, of just what do do with the property. Everything from a recreational park to an indoor ski slope to an industrial site. After Superstorm Sandy, an outfit leased portions of the site to store all of the flood-damaged vehicles from NY for disposal. The Riverhead town counsel made a lot of money doing nothing, so when the latest storm came thru and there were more flood damaged cars, the town gladly allowed the contractor to store vehicles there again for some $400K.

I watched some climate change fanatic on the Weather Channel talking about over 1 million cars being stuck for 48 hours during evacuations from a hurricane because gas stations ran dry. This imbecile claimed if we all went to electric vehicles we wouldn't have that problem. Imagine having to recharge one million vehicles all at once. Yeah, that'll work.

A team from Kyushu University says most of the debate over gasoline and electric cars focuses on fuel efficiency and the CO2 emissions they produce. While electricity and hydrogen are cleaner energy sources, the study finds it still takes a lot of energy to build these vehicles. Specifically, researchers find keeping older fuel-efficient cars on the road longer reduces CO2 emissions significantly more than speeding up the global transition to green technology.

“The faster you replace a car, the more CO2 it emits. It’s no different with electric cars, because when the demand for new cars increases, it shoots up manufacturing emissions,” says Shigemi Kagawa, a professor in Kyushu University’s Faculty of Economics, in a university release.

Hmm, just seeing this. I think there's a difference between "exploded in flames" vs "exploded". Just to be clear, when EVS catch fire, they don't. At least Teslas don't explode. There was the one that flung flaming batteries all around.... when it was crashed at pluss one hundred miles. What happened here is that they just towed this storm damaged car and left it, and it burned. Uncontrolled, these fires do burn long and hot.

Batteries in the gas-powered vehicles are disconnected for storage, so as to avoid fires, but the batteries in electric-powered vehicles can’t be disconnected and remain energized, according to officials. That’s why they are parked in an area separate from the other vehicles, they said.

Well, when one is wrecked, the FD who indeed have procedures on what to do would have done so. But if its just a pile of cars washed up into a parking lot, FD might not have been involved.
