Storm Season: Hurricane Forecast Lowered

I still think they're way off base. 10 hurricanes, try something more like 4 or 5 hurricanes.
MIAMI - Government forecasters minimally reduced their prediction for the Atlantic hurricane season Thursday, saying up to nine hurricanes and up to 16 tropical storms are expected to form.

The forecasters maintained their estimate that three to five of the hurricanes would be strong. The original report forecast up to 17 tropical storms, with up to 10 becoming hurricanes.

But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also cautioned that the season is likely to be above normal, stating that new data has allowed it to increase its confidence level. It now estimates an 85 percent chance of an above-normal season.

Not so quick :finger:

Tornado hits New York, flooding in London, severe flooding in Sudan, earthquakes in Japan.

It's actually been a historic year for natural disasters worldwide.

Yanno, if I guessed at my job and was as wrong as forecasters, people would die. :ohwell:

I predict that next year we will have 3 hurricanes that will hit the CONUS. None will be above a 3.

Ok NOAA, send me a check.

It's not peak season.

Again, peak is September 11th.

Argue as much as you want - my information comes from charts shown on WeatherChannel/WeatherPlus/MSNBC/CNN/FOX News Channel/CBS/ABC/BBC/Disney.

My guess is as good as theirs, and I dont have multi-millions of dollars in equipment.

It could be an active season it all depends on the length of the muskrats hair. Muskrats tend to grow more hair during bad hurricane seasons.

Well, here it is...October

Has anyone seen a major hurricane? :crickets:
TWO Category 5 hurricanes making landfall as a CATEGORY 5 in the same year ... unprecendented.

The rapid intensification of Felix and Humberto were also unprecendented.

Two storms making landfall on the same day in the same continent, also rare.

So, yeah, pretty big hurricane season.

No, they hit Mexico. So they dont count.

Its funny that unless the hurricanes hit CONUS, no one gives a flying fornication. Not even the media.

It still happened, and there is no reason to assume that just because we got lucky (if you want to call the people of Louisiana lucky) 2 years in a row, that the hurricanes aren't out there and aren't getting stronger.

We still have had an above average hurricane season.

Common sense ain't common
I'm kinda new to the coast (4 yrs in VA Beach from 2000-2004) and I've only been here in MD since Dec so what I'm about to say may be wrong but....

Isn't this area (MD/VA coast) a bit overdue for a good sized hurricane? Only one I remember hitting this region in recent memory has been Isabel. Not sure what Isabel did here but it didn't do a whole lot to us in VA Beach.

I see the time it took for Felix and Humberto to form, that's a big deal. Pretty rare for storms to do that.

And 2 category 5 hurricanes is also well above what we'd see in an "Average hurricane season."

Had Humberto hit a day later, that would've also been a major hurricane.
