Give em a break. They like to believe they are driving a quality sports car. In reality, they have to compensate by adding fart can exhaust systems and nitrous to keep up the appearance of "quick". And don't forget all the stickers. Worth 5 horsepower each don't ya know ...............
Sadly, at the end of the day, they are still driving a Civic Si. A nice commuter car for those on a budget or those who value ..... well, value. But don't tell them that though. They will rev their motor and aggrevate the swarm of bees nesting in their tailpipe while screaming obsecenities at you including terms such as "boost", "nozzzzzz", and "less liters."
It's a younger generatation (brought on by Fast and Furious) who were tragically born lacking the audible capacity to differentiate between the sound of real muscle and tin can "gitty up."

The culture has seemed to be in a decline in the last few years, nothing like it was 10 years ago.
As for the Honda's, a majority of them are hacked up, back yard death traps. Every so often though, someone creates a masterpiece. Seeing an all motor civic coupe run mid 13's with only an engine swap, it can be something of beauty. I also come from a different mindset than most people, I do not judge based on where the car comes from, how fast it is etc. You can have a riced "muscle" car, just as much as an import.

You know, Hannibal, power comes from all shapes and sizes of engines. My little 2.4 l Neon was as fast as my 6.1 liter car, either of which would smoke check most any muscle car from back in the day. Now, it takes a bit more to get a Honda there, but it can be done. I agree that oh so many small cars are hacked up noisy horror shows. But many young people understand power and how to make it. Maybe not the way you think, but there are replacements for displacement, they just have to be carefully done.
Agree with both of you. It can be done and some specimens are quite nice. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the examples I've come across don't fit that mold. I appreciate any car that someone invests in properly. But it still blows my mind when people spend more in upgrades than the car is worth (more so, in neglecting the overall appearance of the vehicle in the process). And yes, there is a replacement for displacement and I am a huge fan of some of the options out there. But there remains a difference between an old school Supra or Lancer/WRX vs. an Accord that someone bolted in a budget turbo maxxed out in PSI while not tending to the rest of the car.
I do, however, have a special place reserved in the cold/blackend portion of my heart for the primer colored 4-door Camry sporting the bolt-on spoiler, coffee can size tailpipe, tinted windows and $4k rims that rolls around purging nitrous at every stop light.

We are in agreement then. One of the saddest things I ever saw was way back in the 2004 timeframe, my BIL (early 20s) stopped by with an equally young friend of his. they had a new 2004 Terminator Cobra. Awesone car, right out of the box. "We need your help, Bob here just got this and we want to add more power". Me - "Okay, it's supercharged, so it's not going to be super hard, as long as you do things right." Them - "We got a pulley to slap on there, will add more PSI!!!!" Me - "You know that there is more to it than just changing the pulley, right? You need to address fuel and air or you are taking big risk". them - "It'll be fine." Me - "Guys, I'm not gonna help you destroy this car, you need to have a plan to do it right, this car deserves that. Get more air in, get more air out, ensure it gets the fuel it needs, and that your timing needs are met. Will you need a higher octane fuel?". Them, "Wow, that sounds like a lot of work, cant we just put the pulley on now?"

Not at all. For some reason, certainly NOT the growing population of non-documented "workers", Mexican eateries have popped up like every Sanchez in the tri-County. This particular one is better than the rest in my opinion. So, I will give it some preference.
Ha nice. Yes, especially given the age (and I was guilty of some of this myself), the relationship between power and reliability are not understood ...... well, at least until the car is stitting on blocks waiting for repairs. It's even more fun when you are making car payments on the thing (been there/done that).
Even better is the people who think power power power and ultimately run worse times at the track because they completely failed to spend money in traction/weight transfer. Good for burnouts though. I call it the Dodge Viper conundrum. These guys were easy money when you heard them talk about all the mods they did but you notice them still rolling around on stock tires. Ching ching.

One of my friends had a 4 door Accord, swapped in a monstrosity of an engine (H23 Prelude engine with an H22 Vtec head), car was good for high 12's in the 1/4 mile with only a few bolt on's, a full custom exhaust and a tune. Not everyone puts the time and effort in unfortunately and you end you with some bizarre combinations. The primer Camry is a special case.
I could not even begin to bring up stories from the guys who modded the Lightnings, and Terminators. I would get a ton of calls about them reading something on the forum, and they would want the same power and mods. They would get intimidated when I would get into tuning, adding a larger heat exchanger to help cool the extra air, and fuel. However my all time favorite was the guy who complained that his car was only making a certain number on the dyno, however when he ran the car would be faster than the numbers said. Explained to him how differences of running on a dyno vs real life can be expected. Turns out his tuning shop used an a/c warehouse to run the cars, with little to no airflow across the radiator and intercooler.

Went through that with the Neon guys. Unless you have accurate airflow, it's very hard to say what those numbers mean in real life. I saw where Dinan, the BMW tuner, was going to build a $200K sort of climate controlled dyno with silly control of airflow. He found he could vary a BMWs given power output wildly no other changes than the amount and temp of airflow over the front of the car.

Don't even get me started on the flywheel vs. wheel horsepower thing. It amazes me how difficult it is for people to understand basic fundamentals of driveline loss. Had a select few customers who complained that their car made less power with upgrades, than they did from the factory. Talk about talking to a brick wall.

They threw on a pulley without a tune? Dumb. They are lucky the car lasted at all. Those things can be made very fast very easily, but if you had the money to buy one new, then you probably had the 400 bucks or so it took to get it tuned correctly. I got one new back in the day too..03 redfire convertible. Drove around with an upper pulley for a while, then sold that car and replaced it with a 03 sonic blue coupe with a twin screw on it. The first one was quick, the second car was fast.
I still miss the convertible though.
Speaking of Honda's..one morning, years back, while commuting up 210 in my twin screw cobra I had one of those honda guys pull up along side me, in traffic, and proceed to bounce his car off the rev limiter and due small burnouts. After about 10 minutes of this (my cobra looked stock) I was getting irritated and figured I might be able to shut him up by letting mine jump off the two step once or twice just so he might get the idea that my car wasn't stock (my car was LOUD, and so was the blower). That was a BIG mistake..after that, he was even more insistent. I'm not sure what he thought was going to happen, because we were in rush hour traffic on 210 in the morning, but I immediately regretted that decision. A few minutes later, we end up being the first two cars at the light at the top of 210 before you get to all the on ramps. Light turns green, and he's gone..before I started moving some lady that had been behind him this entire time in a Mercedes pulls up next to me and cracks the window. I thought I was about to catch an earful for egging this guy on, when this old lady yells at me "I've got some speed too!" then took off after that kid. She was driving an AMG E55. I couldn't believe what I'd just witnessed. I don't like street racing, but I like to imagine that she caught up to that annoying little bastard and shut him down.

Kid was about 19/20, evidently his mom had passed in a crash or some other way, and he and his Dad got a large cash settlement out of it. Sadly, out of all the "car guys" in the world, he ended up getting advice from my BIl, who I'm sure will end up in a hell something like Maximum Overdrive to atone for all the evil he has done to cars over the years. Like the whole speeding thing, if the only thing you put at risk is yourself street racing, I don't care so much. Empty road, a couple of cars, meh. Big boy pants and all that, just be responsible.
