The funny (or not so-funny) thing with Kanye being asked if he's concerned about putting Bush on blast is this kid named Philip Bailey who is under investigation by The Secret Service for comments he made about Bush.. get this.. on a gotdamn message board!
Philip Bailey is the chairman of the University of Louisville's Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. When the looting in New Orleans was reported, he wrote on The SOULution's messageboard that people were simply trying to find necessities, adding, "I say shoot every cop, national guard and politician who stands in your way, INCLUDING GEORGE W. BUSH if need be."
That line was enough for a local union member to contact the Louisville police, who spoke to Kentucky's Secret Service office. They met with Bailey last Tuesday. He wasn't moved. He says he doesn't regret anything he wrote. Bailey, 21-years-old, is active in coordinating efforts to fight violence in his city. He is scheduled to appear on a panel this weekend to speak about helping black youth in his community. Bailey feels that the local officials are trying to discredit and intimidate him.
It's up the U.S. Attorney's office if Bailey will be charged with anything.
Local Fraternal Order of Police President Richard Dotson - the man who turned him in - said, "As far as I'm concerned, it's a direct threat against authority. We're concerned that someone out there might believe the remarks of this man."
The SOULution's editors posted a show of support on their site:
"Mr. Bailey's comments represent the freedom of speech granted to each citizen of this nation. We stand by our brother 100%, and his comments. As a staff, we have withstood various attacks verbally and physically, and this is no different. Those wishing to portray Phillip Bailey in a negative light must deal with not one individual, but a movement that will continue to push the envelope of the status quo on an intelligent level."
" We urge all of our readers to be sure of all of the facts in this case and to view our message board, and see for themselves what was said in the context of the conversation. We will continue to defend our right to express ourselves and our free speech by any means necessary. In a time of great challenges ahead of us, let us not forget about the real issue of the Katrina survivors that are struggling for survival."
"Thank you for your time and good day…"
