In Reversal, Student Is Given Extra Exam Time to Pump Breast Milk

A Harvard student must be given extra break time during a medical licensing exam to pump breast milk, a Massachusetts appeals court judge ruled yesterday.

The student, Sophie C. Currier, 33, of Brookline, Mass., had sued the National Board of Medical Examiners after it denied her request for more than the standard 45 minutes of allotted breaks during the nine-hour exam, which she will take over two days.

Ms. Currier has already received some accommodation from the board for dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. She can take the test over two days instead of one, for example.
Ms. Currier should consider being a lawyer, not a doctor.

In My Opinion
I seem to remember enough being pumped and stored to make it through a couple days when my daughter was being fed breast milk.

Im no expert on these matters by any means, but is there some reason that this woman might not be able to do that?

I saw her on CNN this morning. The reason she can't do that is that she's a pain in the ass. I can't wait to see what she asks for next.

a womans breast engorge with milk if they are not pumped, and it is VERY painful. It can cause the glands to become clogged and further medical problems down the road.

it takes longer than the allotted break time to pump the milk. She will also need to eat and go potty during her break.

And when she becomes a doctor, will her patients give her extra time to pump her breast milk? I certainly hope she NEVER works in the ER. There is NO reason she could not plan accordingly to be able to take the test like everyone else. The world is not going to bend to her pissy little fits for the rest of her life, she better learn to adjust.

Didn't you read, she has dyslexia and ADHD.

So even if she does manage to read the instructions on the knocker-pumper, she can't sit still long enough to fill up more than one bottle with boob-juice.

She maybe could have pumped before class started. That would have at least gotten her through most of the test if not all of the test.

I'm not an expert either. But I do know that when you breastfeed you need to express your milk even though you have milk in the freezer at home. Just as Nanny stated, your breast still fill up with milk.

Sure, you've gotta pump, but every two hours? Give me an effin break. The girls is a whiny little brat. You choose to breast feed - you figure out the logistics of it - don't expect everyone to change and bend over backwards for the choice YOU made. Breast feeding not practical - then DON'T!

Hope she doesn't become a surgeon. I'd hate to be on table getting some serious 12 hour long surgery and every two hours she says - "Hold on, I gotta go pump my boob."

I think a law should be made where women are mandatorily fed a pill that makes them dairy farms between the ages of 18 and say... when I stop finding them attractive.

If she can't go for 4.5 hours without pumping either she's just a whiny little :gossip: or I'd like a pic of her...

I'm not taking up for her. If she becomes a surgeon then I agree with you, breastfeeding wouldn't be a wise choice for her.

Like I said she maybe could have pumped before the test. I don't know how long the test took but at least doing it before hand would have gotten her a good way through it if not all the way.
You should try to pump as often as you feed when baby is with you. So if her baby feeds every two hours then she should pump when baby is not with her every two hours to keep her milk supply up. But I'm sure you can go with out pumping for a little while.

If she still needs to pump every few hours, she has no business being in school in the first place. What is it with these woman and their poor choices, then they expect everyone else to accommodate them???

I heard that running warm water over a gland while massaging helps loosen any clogging

She should have been allowed to pump during the test.
only problem is that she would have had to bring enough to share with the whole class.
