Charles Co. Students showcase creativity at regional Destination Imagination event, several teams advance to state competition

Fifty Charles County Destination Imagination teams advance to the state competition later this month after placing at the regional event hosted by Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) March 9. At regionals, 91 teams competed to solve one of six problems that challenge students to work together to apply creativity, use critical thinking skills and unique talents.

Challenges are divided into three levels – elementary, middle and high school. There is also a non-competitive challenge for Rising Stars teams that include students in kindergarten through second grade. Teams that earn first- through fourth-place awards at regionals advance to the state event set for March 30 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

The following teams that advance to the state level are:

On Target (Technical Challenge)


  • Elementary: William A. Diggs Elementary School, Diggs Shocking Lightning Bolts team, first place; Dr. James Craik Elementary School, High Flyers team, second place; Craik, Bacon Bros team, tie for second place; Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, Magnificent Minds team, third place; and Berry Elementary School, Got Talent team, tie for third place.
  • Middle: Piccowaxen Middle School, Pangea Pineapples team, first place; and Mattawoman Middle School, Technical team, second place.
  • High: Independent participants, Scientific Seven team, first place; and North Point High School, Magnificent 7 team, second place.

Medical Mystery (Scientific)

  • Elementary: Mary H. Matula Elementary School, Medical Masters team, first place; Craik, 5th Grade Heading to Broadway team, second place; St. Peter’s School, 4 Imaginators team, third place; and T.C. Martin Elementary School, DI Medical Tigers team, fourth place.
  • Middle: Peter’s Destined2Imagine team, first place; John Hanson and Milton M. Somers middle schools, DI NoNamers team, second place; Somers, Asylum Association team, third place; and Theodore G. Davis Middle School, Chicks n’ Nuggets team, fourth place.
  • High: North Point, North Point… team, first place.

Game On (Fine Arts)

  • Elementary: Mitchell, Jolly Razzleteers team, first place; St. Peter’s, Storm Troopers team, second place; Mitchell, 7 Rollers team, third place; and Craik, Game Masters team, fourth place.
  • Middle: Davis, The Elemelons team, first place; General Smallwood Middle School, Psychedelic Narwhals team, second place; Mattawoman, Fine Art team, third place; and Somers, Giggling Gamers team, fourth place.
  • High: Westlake High School, Amigos team, first place; St. Charles High School, Final Destination team, second place; and North Point, North Point Davis Players team, third place.

Heads Up (Improvisational)

  • Elementary: Mary B. Neal Elementary School, Dynamite Crabs team, first place; Martin, Where’s My Super Suit team, second place; Eva Turner Elementary School, Flippin’ Out team, tie for second place; and Neal, Crabby Patties team, third place.
  • Middle: Somers, Funnyuns Improv-ers team, first place; Matthew Henson Middle School, Mega Pineapplez team, second place; and Mattawoman, Improv team, third place.

Monster Effects (Structural)

  • Elementary: Matula, Technical Monsters team, first place; Archbishop Neale School, Galaxy Narwhal team, second place; J.C. Parks Elementary School, Crazy Monsters team, third place; and Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School, Mudd Monster Building Machines team, fourth place.

  • Middle: Henson, TBFPSP team, first place; Hanson, 7 Drama Llamas team, second place; St. Mary’s Bryantown School, Glue Sticks 2.0 team, third place; and St. Peter’s, The Lightning Bolts team, fourth place.
  • High: Henry E. Lackey and North Point high schools, Little Rascals team, first place; North Point, DI Travelers team, second place; Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, Destination Save a Nation team, third place; and North Point, @TDE team, fourth place.

Special Awards

The Renaissance Award went to the North Point Half ‘N ½… ish team, the St. Peter’s Destined2Imagine team and the Davis Elemelons team. The award is given to teams that demonstrate exceptional skill in the areas of engineering, design or performance.

The DaVinci Award was awarded to the North Point North Point… team and the Rising Stars team from Gale-Bailey Elementary School. The award is given to teams for exceptional creativity, unique approach to the challenge and for risk taking.

The Spirit of DI Award went to the Matula Friend-tastic Dolphins Rising Stars team and the Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School DIViper Squad team. The award is given to teams for exceptional spirit, teamwork, volunteerism and sportsmanship.
