"A glass of wine or two a week — and not more than one large glass on any occasion — may be safe during pregnancy, according to a large study just published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. The British research found no negative effects of such light drinking on 5-year-olds whose mothers had imbibed while pregnant with them. Indeed, these kindergartners were slightly less likely to have behavioral problems and performed somewhat better on cognitive tests than children whose mothers had abstained."

When I went past my due date with my first son, the Dr told me to drink some wine and that it may induce labor. I don't drink so the other option was to find my husband and :gossip:. At that late stage of pregnancy, that was the last thing I wanted so I just opted to wait two more weeks and have the Drs induce me.

I don't see why there would be controversy?

A glass or two of wine has been acceptable for a long time. Most obs say a glass of wine on a special occasion is a-ok. They can't pinpoint an exact "safe" amount, so they say none at all to be safe. But common sense will tell you a glass of wine esp in your second trimester and beyond isn't gonna cause a bit of problem.

There are people that believe if you drink ANY amount you can damage the baby. Then again most of those people (that I know of) are not drinkers to begin with.

I think that it is telling that the children whose mothers had an occasional drink had less behavior issues..I'm positive it isn't from the alcohol..but rather because they have a mother who isn't a freaker-outer and an over protective, over involved mommy bot.

I see this article giving people who don't know when to say "no more" a way out and blame any repercussions on someone else. FAS is something that can't be fixed once it occurs so you have to weigh the potential outcome to the current desire.

I'm more inclined towards safe than sorry. But then, I wasn't much for drinking pre-pregnancy. Not a total abstainer, but about the only thing that I've missed while being pregnant was a chance at dinner at Melting Pot. (Yes, I know they have non alcoholic options... but those just aren't nearly as tasty)
