My younger ones love the Sprayground at Nicolet Park. Only $2 per person... great summer fun. Also visiting the local library for kid craft books/cook books is fun. We like to do art projects too like filling spray bottles with watered down tempra paint and spraying giant pieces of paper outside.

I have to admit i hated here when i first moved here almost 3 years ago. The last year i have really enjoyed it. My kids are only 5 and 3 but the love going to all the parks. We took the kids on base yesterday for the first time and they went crazy. There is a lot to do here. You just have to stop b!tching to see it.

Cove Point Park has a playground and a pool. Not sure if the new pool has opened up in Prince Frederick yet but if not, it will in the near future.

I love this thread, hope a lot of people chime in with ideas. We've only lived here a couple of years, so I look forward to adding to my list of places to visit as my son gets older. IMO, too many kids just don't play outside anymore. What ever happened to just taking the kids to a park or beach and letting them play? Or having friends over to play volleyball or kickball in the yard?

The new pool opened on the 8th! Been saying I want to take B one night when I put the boys down. . . . Really want to get her in swim classes but don't know how to manage that when it's every day and I have to get in the pool with her. . .

Loving all the ideas! My kids are bored as hell in a mall!

Thank you for saying that because most of the time, that's the problem: people are so ingrained to being miserable and beeching that they don't ever find all the cool things there are to do around here.

I agree. I raised 2 children here that are both happy and productive adults. They even grew up playing with the neighbor kids in the yard and were outside most of the time :cds::cds::cds:

I was going to post about this little nugget! Thing2 went to 2 programs last summer and positively LOVED it! He did the roller coaster week (with K'nex) and the robotics week (with Legos)

Jefferson Patterson Park here in Calvert also has some summer programs and various events are held there throughout the year.

The Celtic Festival & Highland Gathering, for one.

I've been wanting to take my out-of-town nephews to do the corn mazes and pumpkin patch type things in the fall. (ex. Forest Hall Farm and Bowles' Farm)

Right here!
Southern Comfort Berry Farm-Strawberries, Longhorn Cattle, and Lots of Fun! Bushwood, MD

And they are the nicest people! Not sure about ponies but they do have berry picking and a petting zoo, and it's a really fun day for the kids (not to mention Mom and Dad because there's all kinds of goodies to snoop through and buy).

Do children need to be "doing" something every moment? Do you have to take them to something amazing every day? I would think that riding a bike, playing outside, reading a book, washing the dog, etc..would be enough. I used to take bowls of flour and spoons outside (don't tell my mom :) and mix it with stuff and "cook" on those green electric boxes (they get hot..try it ) we would take a small trip in the summer, maybe go to an amusment park one day..or a girl scout camp..I don't ever remember feeling upset that I didn't get to go to some activity every day. I think it is just find if there isn't "anything to do." maybe if people would stop insisting their child have some sort of fascinating, amazing, uber-educational experience every day..then when they get to be older they will be able to entertain themselves and won't be chasing excitement.

:cds: Blasphemer!

You mean to tell me that all the time me and my brother and my friends spent in the woods climbing trees, building forts and jumping off cliffs (FUN!) building ramps to jump our bikes :vivaknievel: wasn't uber educational? Physics and gravity played a big part of our outdoor time. I did find out that you should never climb higher than you are willing to fall.:yay:

You are absolutely right. When my kids were little, we didn't load them up with all that kind of things every weekend. I lived in FL for 7 years and never once went to Disney World. *GASP!* (We did a lower cost version of Disney, and it was paid for that day, not for years later!)

Mostly, like you said - they played outside, played in the sprinklers, rode their bikes, the swingset in our back yard, played basketball at the basketball net in the cul de sac of our street, or we went to the library and they got books to read.

But there are a lot of low cost & no cost things to do in this area - and people could certainly take advantage of them. Even just driving over the bridge into Virginia (Fredericksburg way) is just overflowing with a very rich history and who wouldn't want to know more about it just for history's sake? And so much of it is FREE!
