Who started on a literbike and is still alive to tell it? I'm tired of searching for a halfway decent 600 when there are thousands of R1's and CBR 1000's on the market right now for the same price. Got insurance quotes and there's less than a $300 difference in annual premiums. Plenty of people I know moved up to a 1000 after one season. Am I that stupid for starting on a 1000cc?

Its all in the wrist, you can go stupid fast on a 600 or a liter bike. I wouldn't recommend either one for a first bike. I'd get a dual dirt/road enduro as a learner, not too fast and cheap to fix WHEN you drop it. After some time and a MSF course or two, you'll be better educated to think about the next level.
Just my humble opinion,
Ed
PS,
I've been riding dirt and street for around 30 years....
