Congratulations -- that's one adorable puppy. I think there are two breeds that are often confused, the Staffordshire Terrier (smaller of the two) and the American Staffordshire Terrier (often referred to as a Pit Bull, though some argue they are different breeds).

I've used Julie for behavior issues with my dog and she is fantastic. I have also trained with Brian Markowich who is also excellent. I know he has a puppy class. He can be found if you Google "Dog Boy Obedience".

Have fun!

Thank you for the info. Julie contacted us and we started obedience class this past Sunday. Definitely learned a few things on Day #1.

So, what is your input in what you dedcided to do. My puppy, not really puppy, is almost 11 months old and needs basic training. I haven't looked into Petco but was told to as well as Traning by Julie--HELP!?

My understanding is that Petco usually has unqualified trainers that get little instruction and are often uncertified.
TBJ has decided to no longer do group lessons at my stores (and I am told other places as well). I am meeting with another positive reinforcement trainer later today and will post info as soon as we get class dates for the Solomons store.

We are taking once a week classes through St. Mary's Rec & Parks, but it's already 3 weeks in to a 7 week series. You might check online or call to see if they'll have more classes upcoming. It was only $50 for seven classes and they are at the fairgrounds. There are probably 12 -15 dogs, so my distractable dog doesn't always do best during the class itself, but we practice daily and he is really picking up on commands!

The dog trainer is actually training YOU so obviously, you are listening and working with your dog.
I have always heard good things about that trainer however I am put off by the size of the classes. A smaller class size would increase the one on one for specific problems needed by many people

We really enjoyed the class! Julie was extremely nice and informative. The class was fairly small (6-7 pups I believe) but that made for more personal training. The class seemed more about teaching us on how to teach the pups versus training them directly. There could've been only one other puppy there and ours would've been distracted.

We learned a decent amount of commands and they've stuck with the puppies, so overall, I'm very happy with the time and money spent!

I did that R&P class with my previous dog, which passed away at 9 years old in August 2011, and it was an older gentleman that lived up the road/not locally and he was great back then. I will have to check out the R&P website--thanks!:howdy:

IF you had the chance to do it again, woud you opt for the group class or the private lessons?:howdy:

Hmmmmmmmmmm... EXCELLENT question...

I think the classes are effective because you get some guidance while and you can get the puppy's attention for at least a few seconds then they get a little puppy play time and that seems VERY important. I can see (and have considered) why someone would go for a few private lessons. Fewer (hopefully) distractions and you can work on specifics (too mouthy, house training, etc...) and it's in an area the puppy knows well.

After going through the course, I'd tell someone new to take the course, give it a few weeks and use the knowledge you gained from the class, if that doesn't fix things or if something else arises, I'd consider private lessons.
