Summer Vacation Ideas?

Trying to plan a fairly "last minute" summer vacation for our family (2 teenage boys, husband, and myself). We usually go to the beach in NC for a week but want to try something different this year. Looking for places that are under a 10-hour drive from Charles County. Not into camping. Other than that we're open to ideas/suggestions. TIA!

I enjoy Myrtle Beach, and just returned Sunday from a trip. If you stay in Surfside it is less crowded. Downtown MB is a quick drive (about 15-20 minutes) away.

Lots of activities -- helicopter and boat rides, water sports, fishing, surfing, plantations tours, museums, shopping (2 outlet malls) and tons more.

Broadway at the Beach is a fun spot and a must do. Myrtle Beach shopping, dining, nightlife, entertainment in one place! Broadway at the Beach

I'm going back July 4th week and can't wait. I never get bored in MB!

Have you ever been to Virginia Beach? I've never experienced the beach myself, but have heard good reviews. The Beaches of Virginia Beach – Virginia Beach CVB

What about a trip to Tennessee? Tennessee Vacation - The State's Official Travel Planning Website

New York City? Niagra Falls? Canada?

If you are in to amusement parks and want to experience the best, I highly recommend Cedar Point.....it's about and 8-8.5 hr drive, and if you are a fan of roller coasters you WON'T be disappointed. :buddies:

I'm a beach girl myself. Atlantic Beach is nice and pretty quaint. I'm a big fan of Hilton Head as well.

Deep Creek Lake..western maryland...check out deepcreek.com, Railey Mountian Lake Vacation Homes are beautiful, the Lake is amazing, boating, fishing, and tons of others stuff to do, if you enjoy nature you will love it. We love going up over the Christmas Holidays, renting a home, and snowboarding at the WISP resort, we love camping during the summer months...The weather there is perfect...during the summer we rent a boat and go tubing, my teenage son loves it...

Used to date a girl from Cuyahoga Falls Ohio went up there several times years and years ago and it was impressive then. Remember Sandusky Ohio, i recall telling her Great Lakes no big deal i live on the Ches. Bay, saw Lake Erie and went whoa, the Bay doesnt have anything on this Lake.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. We're seriously leaning toward Myrtle Beach with possibly a day or two in Charleston. For those of you who sound like you go to MB fairly often, any tips on where to stay (areas as well as specific hotels/condos), where NOT to stay, good places to eat, and any other tips you'd like to pass along will be very much appreciated. Thanks again!

Surfside is a nice stay and is far less crowded than downtown MB. It is a quick drive to downtown and even closer to Broadway at the Beach. I love Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood, so whenever I'm somewhere that has one or the other I visit them. Dick's Last Resort is fun, but the food is nothing to brag about. You go for the experience, not the meal.

Myrtle Beach would be my choice too. I cant wait for September to come. This year marks 9 years that we have gone to MB in September. I wish I had a place there but I dont. If it werent for grandkids here I'd be moving there after I retire, which is in 27 days :yahoo:
We stay at a place called The Dayton House, its kind of right in the middle of things at 25th and N. Ocean Blvd.. A short 3 minute drive to Broadway at the Beach. Without looking I dont know their summer rates, cause I go right after Labor Day, when prices plunge much lower. But with 2 teenage boys Sept. wouldn't work for you with school. Theres a ton of places to shop with 2 outlets centers. Very nice big Mall. Many places to eat, our favorite is Carolina Roadhouse.
Depending on how many stops on a trip down there, its anywhere from 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours on the road. I always come in from some backroads in North Carolina and come into North Myrtle Beach, not much traffic that way.
