Summer Vacation Ideas?

Used to date a girl from Cuyahoga Falls Ohio went up there several times years and years ago and it was impressive then. Remember Sandusky Ohio, i recall telling her Great Lakes no big deal i live on the Ches. Bay, saw Lake Erie and went whoa, the Bay doesnt have anything on this Lake.

Grew up 90 minutes south of Lake Erie in western PA. Every summer, our "beach" trip was to Presque Isle State Park -- loved it!

Cedar Point is great, although it's been years since I've been there -- spent one of my college summers working there. It was nice to see that the Breakers Hotel is still there, although I'm sure it's changed a great deal.

If you are in to amusement parks and want to experience the best, I highly recommend Cedar Point.....it's about and 8-8.5 hr drive, and if you are a fan of roller coasters you WON'T be disappointed.

Ah Six Flags America ......... minuets from the beltway

don't give me any #### about PG is Ghetto .... it is quiet at the park

Latitude 22 is gone, River City Cafe took over the 2nd & 3rd floor

Nibils was forced off the pier and is now in the old Pizza Hut on 17 in Myrtle. Same great people, same great food! Their old spot on the pier, the one they were at for over 2 decades, the spot the Mayor said he had the duty to get as much rent as possible for the town for, is still empty. Serves the Mayor right, he should be strung out for shark bait!

With any luck, they won't re-elect him, but then, considering how these things usually go, probably they will.

So, my two favorite eating places gone. Now I don't feel so bad about not making it back there yet.

Depending on how many stops on a trip down there, its anywhere from 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours on the road. I always come in from some backroads in North Carolina and come into North Myrtle Beach, not much traffic that way.

95s to 40 s (Wilmington to visit friends) to 17
or
95s to Exit 14 (Lumberton) 74 to 401 (?) 9 to 17

Coming in from NMB you can stay on 31 and parallel 17 without so many lights and come out on the Carolina Byways (22)

What do you like to do? Kids? Golf? Drinking? Budget?

Golfing is something my husband and older son would like to do while there. Looks like there are about a zillion to choose from! Any recommendations on golf courses that won't cost a fortune?

Also, several people have passed along driving tips, best route/less traffic, etc. Since you sound like you're a regular, do you have a recommended route? Thanks!

As soon as you get to MB pickup a Sun Times (local daily paper) and check the sports section for courses running specials. The Legends Golf Group runs some really good package specials on some nice courses.

Just to clarify, Nibils is still in business, just not on the docks and up in Myrtle.

We are flying back down again this weekend, last trip back was just 12 days ago- I love Summer!!

The appeal of Surfside is that it isn't Myrtle.
The appeal of Nibils was partly the family piece (decor & support of NYC firefighters -- sister was working there 9/11) and mostly the location & view.

Doubt if I'd venture into the Myrtle madness to find it.

Sad when places don't value what they have and ditch it in favor of some elusive "better", that usually isn't "better". I see too much of that here at home and don't need to go traveling to see more of it --- too depressing.

MM -- I travel 95 south to 501 -- making the right at South of the Border. From this spot I can be in Surfside in about 75-90 minutes. How long does your route take?

It will probably take more than an hour off your trip. I've never been the 501/Conway route but I've heard stories of terrible traffic and I've seen massive back ups when I've gone out that way to play golf.

Try my route, I promise you'll like it! Route 31 rocks- its like a redneck autobahn!

We are always under 6 hours from La Plata to Broadway (no stops but we never do).

I love, love, love this flying thing again. 1:04 minutes in the air can't be beat!

I'll definitely try it when I go back down in 2.5 weeks. Thanks!!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. We're seriously leaning toward Myrtle Beach with possibly a day or two in Charleston. For those of you who sound like you go to MB fairly often, any tips on where to stay (areas as well as specific hotels/condos), where NOT to stay, good places to eat, and any other tips you'd like to pass along will be very much appreciated. Thanks again!

We stay at Compass Cove in Myrtle Beach, get a condo O/F. Love it, we go every year
