Charles Co. Superintendent creates Fresh Start Advisory Board

Superintendent Kimberly Hill has announced the creation of an advisory board for the Fresh Start Academy. The board, Hill said, will give the community an opportunity to offer input and feedback on the Fresh Start Academy programs, policies and practices.

The Fresh Start Academy Advisory Board will consist of one community member recommended by each of the organizations listed below. All advisory board members must be residents of Charles County who do not currently hold a public office.

  • Charles County Board of Commissioners
  • Charles County Board of Education
  • Charles County Delegation
  • Charles County Branch of NAACP
  • Center for Children
  • Education Association of Charles County (EACC)
  • American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)

Additionally, the Board will include an elementary school parent who will be selected randomly.

Strong partnerships between Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) and its community are essential to effective programs, Hill said. The advisory board will provide input on the design, development, operation and evaluation of the Fresh Start Academy, which will open during school year 2019-20.

About Fresh Start Academy

Fresh Start Academy is a regular CCPS program for children in kindergarten through Grade 2. The program provides a smaller environment to help students who need more individualized instruction and behavior modifications. Children recommended for the program are those who repeatedly display extreme disruptive behaviors, such as destruction of classrooms, running away from the classroom, causing physical harm to others and creating a barrier to learning for all students. Students may be placed at the Academy only after a school has exhausted other available and appropriate interventions. Fresh Start Academy will offer a setting that is data-driven, highly structured and safe for students who persistently demonstrate behavior that impedes their ability to learn.
