.....say roughly 5k. I don't; but, would you invest in a laptop computer, or look for a new car?
The need for one is somewhat greater than the other.
The former would be more of a luxury.

The latter, insurance to prevent the "surprise" 'hey, can ya come pick me up' phone call.

5k is a lot for a laptop that in two years becomes outdated.

Take 600 and buy a laptop and the rest for the car

No, no.....I meant, would you forego getting a laptop to use the whole 5k to invest in a new car?

I've been 'letting my fingers do the walking,' and I have prices on a particular car from three different dealers.
All of them basically amount to a $428, or thereabouts, car payment every month for 4 years. I know that shorter terms help pay off faster, but the payments get larger.

Now, all I need is the 5k. /:-\ I will say that driving a 15 year old car that I got from somebody who got it from somebody, is kinda swaying my thought process to investing in a new car. But there's still the matter of the 5 grand.

BTW.....If laptops cost 5k, I don't want one.

I am slightly taken a back by the wording you are using.

"Invest" in a car???!

I can understand that car is a major investment based solely upon how expensive they can be.

An investment is something I'd intend to sell later because it would be "worth" more due to my investment, but cars aren't going to increase in value.....unless it becomes vintage/collectable, but then you still have to sell it to a buyer willing to buy it to match or beat your investment.

"Investing" in a computer is even worse, IMO.

So, the car would probably be a better choice between the two. A car can take you where you need to go and, if you're handy with a wrench, can last a lot longer than any computer.

I vote "neither". Do you realize how many feral cats you could vet with 5k? Oh yeah, and a feral rabbit.

And I vote "neither" because I'm a cheapo. When I save money, I save it - not spend it. Because spending isn't saving.

Does your car run fine? If so I vote you just keep saving your $ and drive it til it dies.

Well, that's the thing.....
Driving something "til it dies" could leave one somewhere where one would rather not be.
The "one" I speak of is me, in case that wasn't clear.
:snort:

Car runs okay, but it's beginning to need things like seals and gaskets; a tranny to get rid of "the rumble"; and someone who likes working on Chryslers, to do the work. Almost every "little" thing I've had to replace on that car is a "dealer item." That gets 'spensive.

I would not take that car on any trip further than, say, Norfolk VA; I'll say that much; and to me, that's pushin' my luck.

It runs like a dog when I need/want it to; and does okay running around town; to and from; but I'm debating whether or not the money spent on repairs and replacements would be put to better use paying for something a little younger than 15 yrs. old.

I saved up $20k and decided to get a little sports car. Looked around the internet, compared models and features. Looked a t BMWs, Audi's old Datsuns and newer Nissans. Finally decided on a 2008 Mazda MX-5.
Retractable hard top to avoid the problems of a soft convertible. Dark green with tan leather seats because that's the only color for a sports car. Found one with the suspension and GT package in Baltimore and then saw one sitting at Tom Hodges with only 10K miles on it.
Wrote a check and drove it home.

... a week later I got laid off from the job I'd had for the last 24 years.

Save your money till you need it.

I just hope to NOT need it; whether it's for a new(er) car or things marked "other."
Like I said, knowing you "need" a new(er) car doesn't help after you're stranded in the middle of nowhere.
