Can anyone recommend a good location for a surprise (adult) birthday party for 50-75 people? Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's, Anne Arundel even.

I've attended several functions at the Calvert County Sportsman's Club. It has a very nice hall with tables, full kitchen, covered patio area with picnic tables and grill outside.

Check out the local fire departments. They simply ask for a donation (which is tax deductible) and you can usually use their facilities (kitchen, ice machine, etc.).
I just had my husband's 50th surprise party at the Prince Frederick VFD on Rt. 4. Their hall is the actual bays (some FD's have a banquet room but this location did not) but it was still nice. We had about 55 people in attendance, with a DJ and dance floor, and had more than enough room. I made a donation of $150 to the fire department.

Middleton Hall just south of Waldorf has 3 rooms. They can handle several hundred or 25. What ever you need. Nice place with ample parking.

They have two rooms; the one upstairs is the formal room and can hold about 150-200 people; the room downstairs is less formal and can hold about 60 people.
And they cater and have the bar already there, so you can take care of three problems at one time.
