Bad looking 'coon at my house this evening...skinny, stumbling as it walked, from a distance of 50 feet looked like sores on top of it's head.

Son shot it dead with a 22. I've called the control tower and was told that someone would be in touch with us.

That was almost an hour ago. The gentleman on the phone said contact would be tonight, any idea how long we may have to wait?...getting close to my bed time!

Son is worried about something carting this dead 'coon away, but I told him I don't want him any where near it! Any suggestions?

Why not just use a shovel and put it in a heavy duty trash bag?

Thanks! Lady from environmental health called and said to double bag and bury it. I thought maybe they did routine testing for rabies, but she said only if there had been contact with pets or humans.

Did you determine that is was NOT a momma?
Otherwise..you WILL start seeing babies looking for her/looking for food.
Not likely rabies..but distemper or parvo...or one of 4 other diseases they get...
Might let DNR office know...
If you have one sick raccoon on base, there may be many others since it is a closed environment.
You can also pay $50.00 to get it tested yourself.
But too late now....best to bury it..
Any nasty virus will die soon after it dies.
Execpt for roundworm...

:yeahthat: If ANY vermin ('coons, 'possums, or foxes) show up in my yard, I'll be buring them.:coffee:

We don't randomly shoot everything that walks around here, if we did a LOT more deer would be in the freezer (and out of the garden!).

Had a skunk here last fall, husband walked out on the back deck and reached down to pet the "cat"...at the last moment really focused and saw that "cat" was the skunk...

:backawayveryslowly: :killingme

This 'coon really needed to be put out of it's misery, it was sick. I'm now feeling bad that it might have been a mama, but I don't think so...any babes would have gotten sick, also, and most likely died quickly.

I don't indiscriminately shoot anything that moves, but if I see any of the three I named and they don't scurry away, I consider them fair game. We have plenty of squirrels, sound birds, deer, and the next door neighbors' cats.
