Sweet Potato Vine

A guy I work with has them and says he does have luck with them, as a plant, not as a food. He said once they take off, he's going to give me some. Says they are really pretty.

That's what I want the plant not the food! They are very attractive plants and make good ground cover. I'll find a pic after lunch.

I grew them a few years ago. They're very easy to care for.

I was at Lowe's last night and they just got a shipment of SP vines. Go get them before they are dead.

I don't know, when he gets me some, I'll let you know. He's grown them before and really likes them. Wonder if Lowe's will have any tomorrow. I can't go today.

How do you start them by yourself. Don't you just cut the SP in half & put it in water?

Lowe's sell them in six-pack container. They love sandy-clay type soil and lots of sunshine. Water regularly, but do not drown them. Planted some couple weeks ago and they're growing strong.

They're actually good to eat. Steam them until soft and then add diced tomatoes and onions. If you're brave enough, add a bit of fish sauce or some salt.

Planted in a garden, they will make into sweet potatoes in this area.

Actually, the sweet potato vines you buy at the garden center are usually related to morning glories.

The vines you grow from the actual potato are different.

The tag on mine said it would actually produce a tater! I won't eat it..but I'll have to check it out at the end of the season.

They're really pretty....I have the ones in the first two pics, but I wasn't able to find a black one this year. The last pic is pretty...they look great as a ground cover!
