Taking your pet when you run errands

Why do people do this? I'll take Apollo if I'm just going to run in somewhere quick - like the post office - but if I'm going to be in the store for more than a few minutes, I don't take him. He doesn't enjoy sitting in the car and I don't enjoy having him there. But you see all the time some dog locked in a car outside the Shoppers or Giant, and they're still there when I come back out.

What is the purpose of this?

I really dislike that also and another thing I HATE is to see people driving a truck with their dog or dogs in the bed of it. God forbid if you have to brake hard and fast the poor animal(s) go flying out of it. I know it is a truckers thing but come on, would you let your kid(s) ride there, no because it is illegal so the same should apply to animals.

I don't get it myself but our little tiny JRT mix loves to go to the dump. She looks rather ridiculous getting all excited - sitting up in the front of the truck - head looking forward - tongue hanging out – tail wagging – just to go to the dump.

My dog used to love to ride in the car, didnt make any difference where, she just wanted to go. She could tell however, if I made the turn to the vets, she'd freak a little. The turn to the beach she would be barking and jumping, couldnt wait to get out and jump in the water. The same reaction when I went to my parents house or my daughters. She would stand with her two front legs on the console in the front seat and back legs on the back seat. Just staring out the windshield, she would turn her head and look at me once in a while like "are you watching where you're going" or she would give me a kiss as if to say "Thanks Mom". Sure do miss her.:bawl:

I take my dog on lots of errands with me because she'd rather be in a car with a human rather than at home without one, but I don't take her if I will be very long in any one place or if it is really hot outside. Since she is a puppy she has she has almost always gone to work with my husband or I. She isn't left at home alone very often and when she is she does not like it. Monday she went with me to Verizon to pick up a battery and Panera to pick up lunch. She isn't a barker/jumper either. She just sits or lays in the back.

If I need something super super quick, like milk or whatever, and it's not warm outside, I'll take one of my little dogs to McKays or Giant. They like to go on little bitty trips, I like for them to go on little bitty trips and expend some of their energy, and I don't see anything wrong with them being in a parked car for less than 10 minutes. I don't take them if I have multiple stops and I won't leave them in the car for anymore than a few minutes, even if that means leaving the store without getting anything because the lines are too long or whatever.

Them being exposed to other people helps to keep them from being barky von schnauzers. I also feel like it's taught them how to deal with car rides, making the occasional really long ones less of a big deal.

I know people freak out when they see a dog in a car, and I understand why, but, just like everything else, there are other variables that should be taken into account first.

I don't freak out or even get concerned when I see a dog in a car. I assume the human knows how to take care of their pet. If I saw one on a 100* day with the windows rolled up I'd be alarmed, but usually it's just a pooch in the car with the windows cracked and not sweltering. Nothing to get upset about.

Apollo likes to ride in the car, he just doesn't like to sit in the car when I go in a store.

Many years ago I took my 2gsd's and 1 hound out on Black Friday... security/car alarm....... only to run into one of the many stores for a few mins... and my hound ATE the side panel of the door and the seat belt
