tank bags

I want to buy a tank bag for traveling this summer. I'm loking at this FG Onyx Nylon Expandable Magnetic Tank Bag
and other similar like fieldsheer. Any yeas or nays out there as to a specific brand or bag?

Like anything else motorcycle related you get what you pay for, though it's easy to pay WAAAAY more than you need to.

Most tankbags aren't waterproof, so you have to be aware of that if you do get caught in the rain.

I think $89 is pretty good for a tankbag.

Can I ask why a tankbag over a trunkbag to fit that rack? Seems to me, you have a great place to put a bag already, why use the tank?

Street Bike Tail Bags Luggage Accessories - Motorcycle Superstore

A wide variety available, from small to ridiculous:)

One option is similar to the trunk on my bike, where you mount a plate, and the trunk has a quick mount with pins and a latch, so you can pop the hard case off the plate in a second by pressing a button. Nice thing about that it that they can be waterproof, lock onto the bike so a thief cant just snag it while your in paying for gas. This ones a little bit larger than the bag you linked, but only a few inches.

Depending on your travels, those can get a bit larger.. Heres a 48 liter one, thats a good bit larger.

And of course, the soft tail bags can be found just as large a variety.

Most likely "in addition to"

Never been a fan of tank bags, you have to remove them to add fuel. I have a magnetic map pocket I can slap on the tank, very handy but with the luggage I've got, I've never needed an addtional 4 or 5 liters

I had a tank bag way back when on my 81 Suzuki GS450E. I was moving around for my various Navy schools in 84, from pre-Navy home in MA, to FL, then San Diego, then the SF Bay area for final duty station. Discovered one flaw to a black tank bag going across Texas on I10 in July. Seems it gets pretty hot in that bag, and the bottle of shoe edge dressing (black dye, really) got so hot it popped open.

Luckily for me, and through no planning on my part, my white tee shirts were enough to soak it up an inch short of my dress white:) Oh, and I lost one white hat:)

DD, is this to supplement storage you already have?

I had a Fieldsheer Eiffel for my old bike (won't work on the current bike because the tank is plastic). It was great and the most versatile bag I've ever seen! It is basically three components:
Base - the magnetic base could be used alone as a simple map pocket.
Big bag - it has a big main compartment with padding around the sides, three small compartments around the outside of the main compartment, a cell phone pocket, and a map pocket on top.
Small bag - just a small main compartment with a map pocket on top.

Each of the bags had stowable backpack straps and a heavy-duty carry handle. You could zip either bag onto the base or you could zip the small bag onto the big bag which is then zipped to the base (for a HUGE storage capacity). And I think it came with water-resistant covers, but I don't remember.

I have two of the bikes. The rack is on the other one with the fairing and hard bags. I'm looking for a bag for when I take this one.

When I take this one I toss a duffle on the seat behind me. When I take longer duration trips I take the other bike.
