defensive line that struggled to stop the running game of the Carolina Panthers
aftermath of a performance at Carolina that included few -- if any -- positives.
The most alarming developments for the Redskins were their inability to stop the run on defense and the across-the-board breakdowns suffered by their revamped offense.
He was running right through us," Redskins Coach Steve Spurrier said. "Nobody did much to talk about. . . . Hopefully we can tackle him a little bit better in November when we play him again. Time will tell."
But there were major questions about the defensive line's sturdiness even before training camp, and none of the concern was eased when the Panthers averaged 5.4 yards per rushing attempt.
I'm kind of upset that we didn't do a better job against him
Hopefully we can learn to play within the rules and learn to catch the ball," Spurrier said. "If we can do those things, we'll have a lot better chance.
We just made little mistakes," Coles said. "Once everybody gets on the same page, we'll be fine. It's still early. We've got a long way to go."
Said Johnson, "I don't think there's any reason to push the panic button yet."
We need to work the kinks out, iron out some wrinkles. We can play better. We're definitely disappointed in our play. But we'll get it going, no doubt about it."
