Target's HDTV Sale

Sunday morning.....it was cool outside, but me and 10 or so others waited for the store to open.

8:00, the lights come on and the doors were unlocked. We all make our way to the electronics department.

I bought and paid for what I thought was being advertized.
There was a 40" flat screen with USB and HDMI ports, etc., etc. advertized on sale for $400-something. I get the TV home hook it up, then delve into the owner's manual and specs sheet. Turns out, the TV was the wrong one. So, Monday I go back to Target and talk to the fellow in the electronics dept..
After talking to him for about a half hour, he discovers that the sale ad and the sale sign were wrong. The sale price nor the model# in the sale ad and on the sale "tag" matched the TV. Come to find out, the ad and the "tag" were advertizing a TV they didn't even sell.
End result, I got my money back, with an apology; and the young fellow said that he would speak to his manager. In the meantime, I'll keep lookin'.

Question for anybody who knows; what's the latest and greatest? 1080P or 1080I?

Yeah.....prob'ly shoulda posted this in "Computers Technology & the Internet."

Not sure about the latest and greatest but we purchased a Samsung LED 6000 recently and it's absolutely the best tv we've had. We don't use it for everything it's made to do but it has the wi-fi and everything else in today's world...it's one of their smart tv's....great picture

The 1080 difference between P and I is how the screen refreshes the scan lines. Progressive refreshes all the lines every pass, while I only refreshes half of them. The only source for 1080P stuff right now is Blu-Ray, as far as I know, I dont think you can download that level. 1080I is the best resolution you get from broadcast sources like Sat and Metrocast.

So, 1080P is the best, but if your not running a Blu-ray player, you will never need 1080P.

1080p (progressive scan) is preferred over
1080i (interlaced scan). in short a progressive scan design draws each line every refresh and and an interlaced design will draw even lines in one pass and odd lines in another pass. look for a refresh rate of 120Hz or better.

DirecTV has 1080p.
But really the best is 4K that is coming, 16 times sharper than HD. And then there is 8K, 1600 Times sharper. Saw them at Winter CES. The 8K looks 3D without glasses and with one good eye. Unfortunately only one 8K monitor in the World.

Bottom line, get at least 1080P, you will be ready when you shift to Blu-ray DVD and when you use DirecTv. Eventually even cable will catch up.

You don't buy these often, so get the best and grow into it.

Nope Metrocast into the house with 4 splitters off the main.

My advice (Coming from someone who installed home theaters/smart home systems) Unless you are a TV buff, don't buy into the gimmicks of the higher refresh rates, 3D tv's, or even LED TV's. You can find a nice 40+" 720P (same thing as 1080I) for really cheap.

All the looking around I've done says that 1080P makes a smoother picture than 720P.
I'd just like to find a 40" (HDTV) that can manage a METROCAST feed; and I've read and heard that 1080P is the better choice; also that 1080I is better if you choose to use your TV with your computer; which I think would be pretty kewl; but I don't necessarily "need" that.

Do you have the Metrocast HD box or digital cable box? If not then you are not getting HD except on the Network Channels (NBC, ABC, FOX, and CBS located on Channels 101-001, 101-002 etc)

That second part.....I think. I do have one HD flat screen which has an internal digital tuner, that; after being programmed; picked up channels 101.1 through like 123.-something.

With the HD converter box you can get somewhere arround 40 HD channels, atleast all the good ones with the exception of FX, the new FXM, and AMC. Otherwise you only get NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox and PBS in HD.

One word for you

Plasma.

We bought our Panasonic Viera from k-mart for $459, almost 3 years ago. I think the 50" is now like $500 or $550. Ours is only 720P and from what I have read/heard is that the highest any satellite or cable provider broadcast in, but I could be wrong.

I know it's not all fancy and as thin as a dollar bill, none of extra fancy 3d, led lighting (it does have 1 LED), or any other crazy stuff. I honestly think Plasma still had better picture quality than lcd. The LED has made a huge improvement, but I think they are still trying to get on par with Plasma.
