How do they tax you when you buy a used bike from a person? I'm guessing it's at the title office but is it just sales tax on the price or another percentage?

Also any chance the would transfer the tags on the bike to me or do they force you into new ones to get that tax too?

I looked online at the DMV site but then got distracted and never came back to it.

Oh also does the title have to be notarized?

Try and get a bill of sale from the current owner for a couple hundred bucks, the MVA might take it instead of looking up a blue book price. (depending on the year and model, won't work for a 2008 Electa Glide)
New owner, new tags
Just get the title signed.

They will look it up, heres the rules

# Proof of purchase price - This should be a bill of sale signed by both the buyer(s) and seller(s). The bill of sale must be notarized if the following conditions apply:

* the vehicle is less than 7 years old; and
* the purchase price is at least $500 below the book value; and
* the new owner (buyer) wants to base the excise tax calculation (6% of the vehicle's value) on the sale price rather than the book value.

I didnt get a notarized bill of sale, since my purchase price was just a hundred or so below the two values I used, Kelley Blue Book and another one. But, the MVA used the NADA guide, which put the value about 500 higher.

Thanks, one more thing. Is an inspection needed like on cars?

Yes.
Hewitt's on 235 across from San Souci does bike inspections.
FYI - aftermarket exhaust usually won't pass

They don't check emissions, but I think if you start and their ears bleed you won't pass..

I'm sure my aftermarket pipe will pass.

It did without a problem. The whole thing once he got to me took about 5 minutes. He was a pretty cool guy, and you could tell he liked bikes.

Good deal Dn, Mike did mine and it was the same thing 5 min. and got the inspection cert., he never left the parking lot on it. I've got Python Pipes on it and he never mentioned it, thought it might be an issue but cruised right threw.

Do I need to change my AV? I guess I could put a BMW logo behind Wile...

HeHe that would be cool. I tried to find a cooler one but didn't spend much time looking. Now we got to get a ride going!

We should do a group photo at the grave of Stonewall Jackson's left arm.
That was a nice day ride. We can skip Chancellorsvill and stop for picks on River Road.
Was on there 4 weeks ago and some goober fell in the river and got swept away, the rescue screwed up traffic.
