What tax preparation software do you use and how thorough is it?

Just curious. I've been using TurboTax but have used Kiplinger's TaxCut. I debate this every year since both of them appeared to be pretty user-friendly but I wonder if one maximizes the deductions over the other.

I need all the help I can get in the deductions category.

Use to use Turbo Tax all the time, but it always p!ssed me off that while I could file federal right away, I could never get state soon enough. I never got decent records and I was never sure if I did everything right.

A few years ago, my girlfriend and now wife took me to Jackson Hewitt. Yeah, they charge, and if your taxes are substantial, you're paying a bit. LAST year, I *worked* for HR Block, so mine was free.

And here's why I mention it - if you have a friend who works there, they have the "right" to do a few for free. Mainly family, perhaps a friend and they encourage to do perhaps ONE in the event of someone hard on their luck and in a bind. It's good PR that a preparer will do one for free, although it means he doesn't make a dime for an hour of his time. The one tiny advantage of a tax preparer is that they assume responsibility in case of error (but not in case of deliberate fraud).

On the other hand --

Geez, it took me a while to realize that when you file electronically, the hard copy stays with you, permanently. It's absolutely up to you to keep copies of everything in lieu of an audit at that point. For some reason, I thought you still had to mail even after you filed electronically. We had drawers full of old returns, and it finally dawned on me that's where the permanent storage was - right there, in HR Blcok and not the IRS.

If I could be SURE I'd record everything right, I'd do it myself - but I'd probably use HR Block's software. I guess they did sell me on the idea that they INVENTED the thing.

I debate this every year too. I have been using Turbotax for the past few years because I get it discounted if I long in via my Vanguard account page. I found that TaxCut was not as helpful as Turbotax, plus last year Turbotax gave you free access to their Deductions software product which helped a lot in valuing items I had donated to various non-profits, i.e., books to libraries, etc.

I used Tax Act last year for the first time and loved it! The entire process was lengthy, but worth the small cost (I think it was like $15 or something close).

I've used both in the past. TurboTax is a little more helpful but TaxCut is less expensive. In the years I don't expect my return to be complicated, I use TaxCut.

Taxslayer $9.95 for both state and federal combined.

Have you used Taxslayer? I used a version when it was free for military and found the software terrible.

Yes I have used it 3 times. I didn't download it, I use the online version. I have a straight, simple return and can't see paying someone $70.00 to file it when Taxslayer works for my non complicated return.

That sounds much different from the Taxslayer product I tried. The free-file software they provided looked like it was DOS based. Good to know.

I got a better idea - how about you buy one and I buy one and we swap. That means we're only out of pocket on one version... yeah?

For $50.00 you can't beat doing both state & federal. Excellent programs to maximize deductions too. :yay:

I've been using TactAct for several years now and love it. It has helpful prompts and is easy enough for ME to use. The state refund is generally deposited several days from the time of acceptance and the fed goes in on the next cycle of payments. I'm a little wary of my info being on their server, but no one would want my financial identity anyway.:lmao:

:yeahthat: It asked me several questions for deductions that I didn't even know I was entitled to (i.e., sales tax on new pickup truck purchase was deductible) and some very important issues that turned out to be non-issues because of the information provided.
