A Baltimore County, Md., fifth-grader got a visit from the police after his teacher called to report that she had seen a BB gun on the wall behind the student during a class video call.

The boy’s mother, Courtney Lancaster Sperry, a Navy veteran, is warning other parents about a lack of privacy during virtual classes after her son was targeted by a teacher who saw what she thought was a scary-looking gun hanging on the wall of the boy’s bedroom.

“While my son was on a Zoom call, a ‘concerned parent’ and subsequently two teachers saw his properly stowed and mounted Red Ryder BB gun and one other BB gun in the background,” Sperry wrote on Facebook. “He was not holding them and never intentionally showed them on video. In fact, he was oblivious that they could even be seen in the background.”

After the teacher reported the gun, the principal, Jason Feiler, decided to call the police to report the guns and ask that the home be searched.

The principal and the teacher cited a rule stating that students may not bring guns to school and claimed it extended to virtual classes as well, Sperry said, adding that the school handbook does not address rules for virtual learning at all. Besides, “he did not BRING anything to this meeting and he is in his own home,” she said. “They were simply in the background in our home, safely stowed in a room behind a closed door, with no ammunition (if you can even call it that).”

I'm not sure you can really claim ' spying ' since the boy was on a class or school zoom call, however it was a creepy dick move by the teacher and the mother should told the police to go away.

always be cognizant of your environment on video chat calls

I also think the boy should have been at the dinning room table doing his school work, not off in his bed room

The older of my two sons was very much in to paintball and airsoft as a young lad. He proudly displayed his extensive collection of "ordnance" by having wall mounts or hooks for all of it. Would have loved to see that as a backdrop for a virtual class session..LOL!

NO Warrant .... they just showed up requesting entry

which I am sure they would have turned into a demand had the mother refused
If she still refused, they'd have judge-shopped until they got a no-knock warrant, which they would have executed at zero-dark-thirty, and probably have killed the mother and/or the son. That would have showed them, by gawd!

If nothing else this shows anyone who cares the caliber of a-wipes who are principals and teachers in our schools.

If it had been an AR-15 on the wall it would still be none of their damned business.

Cops cannot write their own warrants...last I checked.

If they have to go and get one from the judge it might be a no-knock 3am warrant. And they will shoot the dog on the way in for funsies in like they did to the Mayor of Berwyn Heights a couple years ago.

Given this was B-More those parents/teacher were probably more upset about a bb gun in the background than they would be if the kid's parents were shooting up an 8ball of heroin in the background.

my daughters desk is in her room, she does her school work at the table
So? My daughters did their homework on the desks in their bedrooms, larger "craft" type projects the exception.

My youngest son avoided that issue altogether by never doing his homework....... ;-p
