Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately my husband is being relocated to PAX and we are already having a house built in Wildewood (California, MARYLAND) ;) and I don't want too long of a commute.

I currently teach 4th grade in a school that sounds similar to the ones you are describing. I am more of a drill sergeant than a teacher and I break up fights all the time... so as much as it sucks, I am used to it. I really just want to find *something* to get my foot in the door, and then if I'm unhappy after a year, I can always look at other schools.

Question-would anyone recommend any specific schools to try for? Like I said before, I've applied to Calvert and St. Mary's County and am in the process of mailing out my resume to each individual school as well, but in the chance that I hear back from more than one, are there a few good ones/bad ones that I should be aware of? All opinions are welcome. Thanks again everyone!
Fortunately for you, the school closest to your new home is a good one, Hollywood Elementary.

In Calvert, the closest are Appeal and Dowell. I have only met one person who said anything bad about Appeal and she is :jameo: My daughter will be starting there this fall, so I have been doing some research and I am satisfied. Appeal is grades 3-5.

Dowell is a new school, and I have co-workers with kids there. They are very happy with that school also.

I recommend staying away from Lexington Park or Carver Elementary, but that's just based on their reputations.

Don't sweat the doom and gloom you got from the previous poster. I know a lot of teachers (I married one), and they say the systems are pretty average. Some good things, some bad, but they still work there.

My daughter and I live in Wildewood and she attends Hollywood Elementary. WONDERFUL school! Town Creek Elementary is also failry close by and my niece attends there. A new elementary school is going to be built in Wildewood and should open for school year 2009 - I believe.

Anyone know when schools generally start the hiring process for the upcoming school year? Is it too early to hope to get a call for an interview? Any info is much appreciated!

There were interviews being conducted for the teaching positions at the Chesapeake Charter school. I'm not sure if the interview process has been completed at this time, but you could always check.

Greenview Knolls Elementary School

My kids have been attending Greenview Knolls in Great Mills. I feel it is an excellent place. My wife has been volunteering there for years and has never had a bad thing to say about the school (she is a certified teacher, taking time off to be with the kids, till all are in HS). Teachers are good; the principle is great (though he is retiring this year.) I know they will have a few openings for next year, two teachers are retiring, one is getting married and moving and another's husband is being transferred.

I know of one teacher from Greenview Knolls that will be going to the charter school this fall.

Generally, private schools don't pay as well as public schools. You could debate as to whether the teachers are as qualified because many are not certified or have to continue to take courses. Some may believe because they don't have to put up with the discipline problems that public schools endure makes them more attractive.
