For god's sake! How many freaking people do you have to kill to get a death penalty around here??

Well, he was under the age of 18 during the comission of the crime. I wonder how they made it murder1 anyway. 'Lying in wait' I guess.

And I'll bet you $10 right here and now that the gun possession charge will get kicked away. For all our debate and ranting about gun violence in this country, we're sure quick to plea bargain those charges away.

Chances are they'll plead down the murder itself and allow it to run concurrent with the DC sentence.

And prosecuting criminals ineligible to own guns for their firearms offenses, now that would be a novel concept. They rather make the non-criminals go through all kinds of hoops to buy and own guns.

Yeah, it sucks.

When asked whether he would be seeking the death Penalty in this case, Covington indicated that, "Unless new facts emerge, this case does not meet the legal criteria that would allow the Court to impose the death penalty. So, obviously, I would not seek a penalty that the law would not allow."

Waldorf Teen Indicted for Murder in Hampshire Shooting - Southern Maryland Headline News

I was wondering what the criteria was.... Sounds like premeditation, in the commission of a felony and DNA evidence linking him directly to the crime is a factor (something added in 2009 I think).

Now the murder in Washington DC seems to meet that criteria for Maryland (taxi cab driver robbed and murdered) but they don't have the dealth penalty in DC.

BTW, that isn't the kids Facebook (post #35 Virgo posted it)- many of us saw that kids facebook after he was arrested. He seemed to be athetic, have many friends and his girlfriend was linked who had pictures up making her look like a two-bit whore and I think a smoking pot or something another picture (she was inhalling from a bong). Not sure if his or her facebook still exists.

Joshua Terrell Mebane, 17, was indicted for First Degree Murder of Teresa Bass, Attempted First Degree Murder of Jerry Bass, First Degree Assault on both Mr. and Mrs. Bass, multiple counts of Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Crime of Violence and Possessing a Handgun Under the Age of 21. Mebane faces 2 life sentences plus 68 years if convicted on all counts.
Mebane is currently incarcerated in Washington DC on an unrelated charge of murder for the death of cab driver Quadar Mohammad.
Like vrai said, "how many people do you have to kill?" First Degree Murder and no death penalty??? This is one reason our country is going to sh##! Liberal Laws.

I don't have any knowledge about the death penalty being carried out in Maryland, but often times its about precedent. I know it was reported by many legal experts that it is unlikely that anyone in WA will be ever charged with the death penalty again because they opted to not charge Gary Ridgeway with the DP in exchange for getting info about his victims' whereabouts. Perhaps something like this has happened in this state?

As far as a FB page, the defense would have had that pulled right away

Like I said, First Degree Murder and no death penalty? When are we going to wake up. There is no fear of punishment for murders. You want to lower the murder rate, gun deaths....start putting these people in front of a firing squad and public executions.

He was 17. After Roper vs. Simmons, not to mention the Maryland statute, the has to be over 18 to be eligible for the death penalty.

Moot point anyway as O-Money is working to abolish the death penalty in MD during this term.
