Telephone use...

at what age did or do you let your kids use the phone?

I have a 8yr old girl and don't allow phone use unless it's needed.
Say, "can I come over to play", calling grandma's, short calls for a purpose only and generally I talk to the adults on the other end also.

She has a friend that calls immediately after getting off the bus, which they ride together. I find it odd that her mother would let her use the phone freely.

Why? Is it a pay phone?

Cripes, you need to get with the times. Most 8 year olds now-a-days have cell phones. What kind of parent are you?

One that doesn't see the need for a CHILD to have free use of a phone.
I can't think of one kid in her 3rd grade class that has a cell phone.

Please tell me you've at least shown her how to dial 9-1-1, or grandma, etc. in the event of an emergency.

I wasn't allowed to use the phone at 8.
What does an 8yr old have to say that can't wait till recess?

YOU DON'T TRUST YOUR CHILD? IT'S A KID THING YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND LOL!!!!!:snacks: MAYBE YOU COULD LISTEN IN ON THERE CONVERSATION.... THEN YOU WOULD FIND IT BORING AND HANG UP THE PHONE.

YES, she knows HOW to use the phone.
She know how to call family and 911.

I just don't see the need for her to hang on the phone.

Sorry I didn't know I had the caps lock on. YOU don't need to come at me like that there's a way to talk to me privately if you had a problem NACHOMAMA. Now back to the topic:buddies:

As long as they aren't dialing 900 numbers or running up your credit card, whats the harm? girls will be girls.

My 11 year old has no interest in "chatting". Friends will ring the doorbell and they go out and play football/baseball in the yard (imagine that) I don't think they have each others phone numbers.

Daughter, who is now 18, started getting "social" calls when she was 15. She also got a time limit of 5 minutes to chat and nobody was allowed to call past 8:00 at night.

I know, I'm a dinosaur and don't even have call waiting. I wouldn't even have a cell phone if it didn't take nifty pictures and would be handy if ever in an emergency situation.
