Temporary/Transit Tag

I'll be going to Richmond on Friday to look at a pickup with the hopes of making a deal. It will be a private sale. Not a dealership.

How do I tag it so I can drive it home?

Maryland will only issue a temp tag if you're buying the vehicle in the state of Maryland. Virginia will only issue a temp tag if you're a Virginia resident. I really don't want to tow it, but if it comes down to that, I will.

Anyone know another way to do this?

Painful, but I would ask the DMV, possibly they could issue a temp tag or they may tell you to contact the DMV in Virginia.

Don't you have an old tag laying around in the garage or a barn?
An "old tag" would not have current registration sticker though....

I've used current tags off of other of my vehicles to move vehicles, boats and trailers. Maryland has a short grace-period before you are required to officially add a "new" vehicle to existing insurance policy. Of course you are breaking the law by running the "wrong" tag and registration ...that's the risk.

Maryland also requires you to have the title before they'll issue a temp tag. And, as I said in my original post, Virginia will only issue temp/transit tags to Virginia residents.

I'm not fond of the idea of using an old plate, or a plate from another vehicle. As I see it, my only other option would be if the seller has the tag from the truck that he would allow me to use, and then send back to him.

That. I've both loaned, and been loaned, existing tags like that. Only bit me once...guy that bought a Harley from me and drove it home to Arkansas was slow to send my tag back..and in the meantime I let the insurance lapse. That was my first - and last - lesson in how quickly and severely MD penalizes you for having no insurance on vehicle that still has valid registration...LOL

I've done this too, but the seller may not want too do it as he's on the line if you don't return it.

Damned glad to meet you
All I have is one word of caution. Do not use an old tag if you are coming across the Nice bridge. It is my understanding the toll booths are gone and they use tag readers to bill the toll. The Peoples Republic Bridge Authori-TAH might want a word with you.🚓
