See, I like to tip. It makes me happy to reward a good server because in my mind they make all the difference in the world when it comes to enjoying my dining experience. The food can be amazing and plated in 24k gold, but if the service sucks the whole meal sucks.
I guess that depends on your definition of good service. I don't really like being chatted up or asked every 30 seconds if I need a drink refill. I'm an introvert and not looking to make a fake friend. And i'm sure its got to be emotionally draining for some (not all) wait staff who have to fake being perky or risk not making enough money that day.
I always liked the style I saw in Japan. Little button on the table to call for service. Ready to order? Hit the button. Need a refill? hit the button. Want your bill? hit the button.
They had several servers for the whole restaurant, not each server to a section, so when you hit the button someone would be over immediately and not 15 minutes after you have been trying to catch your waitress' eye as she seemingly hits the same table 300+ times and never comes over to your section.
BTW I do tip well, I just don't think it's the most optimal system for customers or servers. Works great for owners though.
