My daughters would heartily agree.

Yep, my younger brother worked 3 nights a week as the front bar, bar back at McGarveys and two sisters that served tables at Pier 7 Crab Cafe in the middle 80's and early 90's and all three did very well. Most summer weeks they made more than me as a elevator mechanic.

If I had to go back into that sector, I'd pick a full wage instead of half-wage + tips, without hesitation.

I made WAY more hourly than I could have at some cashier job or whatever.

Ahma stick my neck out here and bet that you look nothing like either my daughters and might not have had the same success serving drinks to well-off DC professionals. ;-p

The younger one made even more money in tips after she graduated UoM and moved to Miami Beach, working in a couple busy bars there. She routinely made enough that it enabled her to buy a new car and rent a nice apartment near South Beach.

She eventually went back to college in south Florida, getting her Masters and eventually her PhD. After finishing that and becoming frustrated with the lack of good job offers with her new degree, she seriously considered going back to being a waitress and event hostess because the money was so good.
