The Atlantic calls for COVID amnesty

Had an interesting experience at the doc yesterday. The ortho center finally dropped the mask requirement, but a few were still wearing them. That's fine, whatever. Got in to see the doc, she's wearing a mask. Ok, whatever.

My knees are bad, and as part of the discussion, told her that all my house projects are on hold because I can't get down on the floor or up on a ladder. She gives me a funny look... A few minutes later, she said that "we" believe anyone over 50 shouldn't be on a ladder, that the ladder tasks should be delegated to someone younger.

Exsqueeze me? 50?!?! Pretty sure the "we" was "her", and then the mask made perfect sense. Super-overcautious. Need to protect ourselves from the world.

So how many over 50 still actively work around the house and use ladders? I'm almost 70 and thee only reason I'm not using a ladder is because it hurts, not because I'm frail or weak.
60 and use one a couple times a week.

Now, I'm in no shape to climb up an extension ladder but if i was I'd be doing it.

Hell when my Grandfather was 88, I dropped by his house on one of my twice weekly visits and he was up the extension ladder and pulling leaves out of a downspout. ( I told him to forget about it and I did it while he chilled two beers in the house )

50 is rediculous.

I was working on our old boat yard crane yesterday. I can't count how many times I climbed a step ladder into the cab. I turned 60 in January.

the poor dad
The tops on these bins don’t close themselves! This 54yo climbs the ladder all the time to close them.

Older than you and never have thought twice about using a ladder, but I have heard many guys way younger than I say they avoid using a ladder cuz it's dangerous for someone their age.

And that's fine. If they feel they are not comfortable on a ladder, it's better they don't. Just the fact that they have mental reservations could be an issue. But to just generalize that someone over 50 shouldn't is really kind of short-sighted.

I am 80 years old.
I used to get on the roof with my leaf blower and walk along the roof blowing the leaves out of the gutters.
I don't feel safe doing that any longer, so I climb the ladder and clean them out. I hate maple trees. those damned helicopter seeds they put out are a pain in the ass.
I am happy I am still able to do most anything I want to do, only I am a bit more careful now.
Ladders are perfectly safe if used properly.

*I literally just this minute found out - like, after I quoted this person - that this person just died today. I am not happy to hear this, and I will refrain from shitting on the dead. I do hope she receives amnesty where she's going, and I hope she has a fairer insight into the minds of those she deemed "the right people" to die

And I literally just this minute found out that Julie Powell said that. Which is too bad because I really enjoyed her book. But there's a lot of "too bad" going around with these celebrity types because they all seem to be batshit crazy, which is fine, and violent ugly monsters, which isn't fine.

As far as shitting on the dead, just because someone dies doesn't make them a good person all of a sudden. They are still the ahole they always were and still deserve any criticism that comes their way. It's the legacy they left behind, otherwise we'd be like, "Oh, let's stop talking about Pol Pot, he's dead and we shouldn't be shitting on the dead." I don't consider dead people to be a protected class.

But I agree with the rest of your tongue-lashing. Forgiveness is overrated.

If I may ...
For your consideration ...

Yeah. Like when the Lord said, "If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Clearly, He wasn't dealing with some really demented satanic and evil maniacal psychopaths hell bent on destroying what he created. Maybe we should take a page from his playbook and develop something along the lines of the flood Noah dealt with and rid ourselves of these satanic f...ks? I'm pretty sure the Lord will forgive us for not forgiving them, seeing as they are destroying his creations. Besides, apparently we are already forgiven through Christ dying on the cross for our sins anyways. So we are covered.

The Nuremberg trials seem to set the precedent, that just because you're "following orders" doesn't mean that you are exempt from the consequences of your ****ed up, repugnant behavior.

Let's relive some of the fonder memories from the past 2 years:

Some tweets and quotes:

The CDC should roll out a new program: Get the shot or get shot. The unvaccinated need to be rounded up and lined up in front of open trenches. Their choice is simple.

I see the lunacy I have been missing from Sapidus various MPD's

Never climb higher than you are willing to fall. This motto served me well when I was still climbing deer stands in the dark.
