This is the first that I am seeing this thread. We have had no issues. Our IT guy is running every test possible. I am so surprised nobody emailed us about this when it started. The first we heard of it was when an email was forwarded it to us today. We have a fb page, most people know who I am now in here, and my cell number/email addy are all over the place. If we find anything I will be sure to update you!

Not saying it's NOT BayNet, but it sometimes is the advertising network that injects something nasty.

Malware delivered by Yahoo, Fox, Google ads | InSecurity Complex - CNET News

Yet another reason to use Mozilla which lets you block images from well-known advertising sites, to use FlashBlock to block all annoying flash animations (hello, BayNet, I'm looking at you), and to sign up for OpenDNS which prevents your entire PC from accessing known malware delivery sites.

And for those of you who cannot open the link thanks to this crap...

Recently there have been emails circulating throughout the region stating that TBN and somd.com are sending out viruses. This is not true. Both sites have run multiple checks and no virus of any type has been found.

Below is a copy of the email that has been sent out:

This is a warning not to visit the BayNet and SOMD (Southern Maryland Online) websites until further notice. It appears the sites may have been hacked and are distributing infected flash media files. ITS has had several computers compromised. If you visit either site, your browser may automatically play or download the infected flash files and possibly damage your computer. There is no reason to ignore this warning, however there is also no way for me to independently verify its validity.

This email initially came from an IT person at SAIC who detected a virus on a computer and notice that our site and somd.com were the most frequented sites. However, the virus came from neither. The email clearly stated that they could not verify its validity.

If anyone has any questions or concerns please contact us at support@thebaynet.com.

Crying wolf

Before people start forwarding virus attack warnings and such, they should get all of the facts. This was sent out by someone working on someone else's computers and found a virus, and because they had visted the Baynet site, it was assumed that Baynet was where they got virus. It is very easy to permanently damaged someone's business and reputation . You can already see by the email chain that damage has already occured. If it was me I would already be seeking legal recourse for slander.

...seeking legal recourse for slander.
I'm not a lawyer, but this sounds extreme to me. Slander is a pretty strong word. Actually you probably mean defamation in a general sense, and libel more specifically, given that it was published (slander is verbal, not written).

Defamation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In either case, to win a libel case, "they must prove that the statement was made without adequate research into the truthfulness of the statement". Furthermore, from some quick research, it sounds like statements that were made in the sincere and reasonable belief that they were true are usually legally treated as being true (not false and thus not defamation) as long as a reasonable person might make the same inference. Since the statement was heavily caveated, but contained enough specific factual details that led other knowledgeable network admins to conclude it was appropriate to institute immediate defensive action, I believe that a claim of libel would be hard to uphold.

They just blocked the baynet here now because of that crap....
oh well.... just a matter of time the block this as well....
.... I still have my phone

What is all it talk of slander and such... I'm pretty sure a private business has the legal right to block any website it wants for whatever reason it wants. And as for the email... as far as I know they sent it out to their employees and the email explained what they suspected and also said they weren't sure but were taking precautions anyway. Can't see where that is illegal either.

And no mention of the fact that this is a COMPANY computer and the most visited sites were BayNet and somd.com
Dollars well spent over there at SAIC huh?? :smack:

The email is still getting circulated all over the area. :tantrum

oh not to mention word of mouth about employees who have been without computer for up to 3 weeks because of a virus (trojan) that they say was traced to a certain site.

The problem for any site, particularly sites like this, is that any URL can be a link to a virus, malware or spyware and the site operator doesn't have to know about it.

Does every hosting admin manually check every ad to make sure the URL is legit? I thnk that would be hard to do and make the sites very unprofitable.
