The Characterization Of Alice Johnson’s Crimes Is Wrong. She Deserved Punishment

Johnson confessed that she served as a “telephone mule, passing messages between distributors and sellers.” Mic framed it similarly: “Johnson was convicted and sentenced to life without parole in 1996 for her role facilitating communications in a cocaine trafficking operation in Memphis, Tennessee.”

It was just one mistake, she says. She was just a middlewoman trying to make ends meet and not involved in any of the icky parts of cartel operations, or so Johnson would have us believe.

Among the acts court documents say Johnson committed are:

  1. Allowing cocaine to be exchanged outside her residence (at least 11 kilos on two separate occasions).
  2. Renting an apartment under the pseudonym Tretessa Johnson (presumably for trafficking purposes).
  3. Delivering “large sums” of currency to other members of the conspiracy as payment for cocaine.
  4. Discussing “further cocaine transactions” with other members of the conspiracy.
  5. Directing another member of the drug ring, Paul Duventre, to make “a series of trips transporting cocaine from Houston, Texas to Memphis, Tennessee.”
  6. Giving a plane ticket to Houston under a pseudonym to Mose Williams, who had just delivered a Nissan station wagon “containing approximately $1.5 million in U.S. currency” to another member of the operation, for the purposes of receiving another Nissan station wagon filled with 75 kilograms of cocaine.
  7. Instructing Williams to deliver 10 kilograms of cocaine to another member of the operation, “to be distributed in Marion, Arkansas.”
  8. Receiving a delivery of cocaine.
  9. Meeting conspirators at a house while $1.5 million dollars was loaded into a Nissan station wagon.

The jury convicted Johnson on counts 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 12, and 15 below, which represent all counts on which she was charged:

Well she served 11 years. That is some punishment.
Maybe not enough, but some.

We either want to be tough on crime or we don't. I'd rather see them go harder on the top tier people that are doing the actual importing than the low level street dealer.

I'm stil not feeling a life without parole, given how many murderers dont get that harsh a sentence. Hell, people that diddle little kids most often dont get that...... when they should get a bullet.

I don't think anyone has argued that she doesn't deserve punishment. The question is, has she sufficiently paid her "debt to society"? I'm okay with the answer to that being "yes".

It's funny, however, that the liberals are all for giving someone a second chance...unless it's a Republican who commutes their sentence.

... Or if it's a non-leftist getting the pardon/commutation.

Because.. You know... Nazi and all.

Having a #### fit over Dinesh D'Souza and Joe Arpaio. Really??

Now they want to have a fit over this woman who has been a model prisoner and appears to have gotten control of herself, yet Barack Obama pardoned/commuted major drug dealers and the Lefties didn't bat an eyelash.

My earlier comment is my opinion.

I'm betting he was selling them.

Damned glad to meet you
Nope you got it right, 22 years. sorry.
Maybe we have fed and clothed and kept her under roof long enough.

Now she can go on welfare. Oh Lawd why did I say that.

Because she probably will.

P.S. Wouldn't it be a kick in the head if she wanted to go back?

As long as she doesn't re-offend the way Obama's pardon picks tended to do (en masse, it seemed).
