The Departed

Watch the trailer...

The Departed is my most anticipated movie of the year. Martin Scorsese's my favorite director and even though I deeply enjoyed his Hollywood-set Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, I'm glad he's returning to the street crime genre he perfected with such modern classics as Casino, Goodfellas, and Mean Streets. Here, he's assembled an excellent cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin. All are among my favorites, especially DiCaprio, Damon, and Nicholson. I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up on top of my 2006 top ten list.

It opens October 6th. I plan to see it then and will post a review afterwards.

Forget Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, and Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese is the best director of our time. The acclaimed director behind Casino, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull returns to the world of crime with The Departed, which transplants the story of Infernal Affairs, an Asian film seen by relatively few in the West, to the mean streets of South Boston, where the State Police is waging a war on organized crime.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a police officer who's infiltrated the most powerful gang, run by a volatile kingpin (Jack Nicholson) who has sent his own henchmen (Matt Damon) to burrow into the police unit hoping to put him out of business. As the film unfolds, the two inside men become aware of one another and must race against time to discover the other's identity.

Martin Scorsese's on fire and uses this clever concept to both create bone-chilling, high-tension action sequences and examine the very nature of identity through the prism of young men who're behind enemy lines and in over their heads. He brings razzle-dazzale style and incomparable energy to William Monahan's clever script, which has more twists and turns than a bag of pretzels and great (and authentic Boston) dialogue.

The brightest actors of their generation, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon are both excellent. We come to sympathize with the dedicated, but also terrified individual DiCaprio plays and loathe the very core of the corrupt, deceitful one played by Damon. It's a credit to both the film isn't stolen from them by Jack Nicholson, who's in top form and oozes ferocious madness as an unrestrained gangland chief. The supporting cast, including Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, and a scene-stealing Mark Wahlberg, are all put the sturdy use by Scorsese, who ensures no one is left out to dry.

Every once in awhile, a film comes along which reminds me why I love movies. The Departed is such a film. Fast-paced, sophisticated entertainment I recommend with much enthusiasm.

Freaking awesome movie. I saw it twice.

It had superb acting and a great story line. The ending came completely out of the blew.

I really liked Jack Nicholson's character.

I started speaking with a Boston accent after I saw this movie . . .

Anyone else see this great movie?

I'm into the romance or comedy type movies - not the violent, etc., but this movie was good and kept you watching. Leo D & Jack N were really good in it as were the other actors. It's worth seeing.

I am glad those who've seen it enjoyed it.

I'll definitely buy the two-disc special edition on Tuesday. I can't wait to watch it again, then the special features.

I saw it in theaters and loved it - it's a keeper. I'm looking forward to watching it again. I think it's up there with Gangs of New York but instead this one has Matt Damon it in and the infamous Joker a.k.a. Jack Nicholson.

The Departed won big at the Academy Awards last night, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and, the big one, Best Picture.

I was glad to see Martin Scorsese finally awarded Best Director. It's hard to believe, despite directing such modern classics as The Aviator, Casino, GoodFellas, Mean Streets, and Raging Bull, he'd never won before.

Although its not my normal choice in movie selections, I will say that it was a great movie. Fun to watch.
