The Flippin' Chinese

has really pizzed my boy off now. Thanks to their continuing efforts to poison the free world, we had to take my son's "Sarge" jeep away from him. Mattel is sending us a refund and all but how do you explain to a 5 year old that his toy has potentially harmful paint and it has to be taken away? Luckily he was just a wee bit upset but still, who should be the target of your anger? The Chinese and all the production short cuts they take with food and finished products or the American firms that continue to do business with them?

According to mattel's website they are implementing a host of new safeguards to prevent this from happening again. Why weren't they doing this before? They at least owe it to their stockholders to take every precaution to protect the consumer. BUT the subcontractor that painted the toys were given safe paint and they decided to use a lead filled paint instead.

Ok rant done carry on.

Is there REALLY any danger??

Unless the paint is chipping and he's eating the paint, I wouldn't think there were be any real danger anyways.

I mean we grew up with lead paint on the walls, on our beds, on our plates, bowls, roasting pans and eating utensils.. I honestly don't remember anyone suffering from lead poisining or lead induced illnesses.

That's because it was mostly hype, just like that DDT crap.

Kom, the reason companies do recalls on stupid things is because of our litigious society. If someone can sue McDonald's because they got fat, certainly someone will figure out a way to sue Mattel because their kid ate a toy truck and got sick.

You sure about that?
Actually I had a cousin die of lead poisoning, but it was traced back to the pipes at his grandparents house, had nothing to do with the paint in his house, or on his toys.

I think it's more of a culmination of things, lead in the paint, unsafe levels of other garbage (meds, pesticides etc.) that really irks me. Let me ask you this, would you let your little guy play with it? Because this is what it really comes down to.

Good question.

I don't think he has any of the toys mentioned or listed, but I haven't dug through his collection to check either.

If I did find one from the list of toys I'd probably throw it away, not worth the hassle for me to get the refund.

But unless the paint is chipped or flaked i wouldn't be wasting my time and money going to get blood work done on Bubba.

We're not either (blood work) but it is hard to explain to a child, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of every toy he has, that he can't have that toy. I was really surprised to see the amount of toys that are on the recall list, Mattel (which includes Fisher Price) has done a good job about getting the word out there.

We paid $4 for the toy and Mattel is sending us check for $7 and a postage paid mailing label for the return.

Blame Mattel for outsourcing their production to China.

Oh my... You're out four dollars! :jameo:

I'd just throw the toy away and not buy anything else made in China (if I could help it).

Most kids would rather play with the box that toys come in anyway.

I agree. We used play with mercury when we're kids. We would break the thermometer and then collect the mercury in the cup of our palms and swirl it around while the other kids try to catch /pick it up. We also used it to make pennies shine, among other things. Lead is basically a component of all our homemade toys and I do remember the health professionals spraying our house with DDT before the rainy season starts to prevent malaria. So far, I'm pushing 50 and is still in pretty good health. BTW, I used to eat those fish caught by using sodium cyanide.

In regards to the magnet issue, the Chinese have said that the magnets were attached in accordance with Mattel's specifications. Don't know if that's true or not but it's Mattel's responsibility to ensure that their specifications are clearly written and that U.S. safety requirements are being met by the toy manufacturing facility and its sub-contractors. Mattel and other marketers have to upgrade their quality assurance procedures in order to insure product safety.

As for foods and pharmaceuticals, I'm not buying any products labeled "Product of China"!

No, we are not out $4. We paid $4 and they are reimbursing us $7 that equals $3 to my favor.

I would suggest that you patiently tell him that " his toy has potentially harmful paint and it has to be taken away"

If that doesn't work, tell him to suck it up and play with another toy.

On the other hand, you could just ignore the recall and let him continue to play with it.

Buy American?

Where? Not being facetious, I recently ordered a well known German kitchen knife and it too was made in China! :lmao:
