The Great Train Robbery: 2nd Bridge Span & Commuter Rail

Opinions are my own...

One day after the election was over, Dyson's Propaganda Paper had already started the campaign to promote a second bridge at Solomons and commuter rail to So. Md. I don't commute, so I wanted to get opinions and feedback from those who do:

1) Do you think a second span is really warranted now or in the near future? Is a tunnel feasible or cost effective? Other options? How long until the current bridge falls down (Ever notice those big steel bands holding the concrete piers together at the top? They weren't there when they built the bridge.)?

2) I am a big fan of rail when and where it is practical and cost-effective. I would be happy to take the train from St. Mary's to Washington if I could get there in the same amount of time, or less, that it would take to drive for more-or-less the same cost. Also, I don't think any one who has seen the traffic on Rt 301 would disagree that the Metro needs to come down to at least Waldorf, if not La Plata.

But Does it make sense to have a commuter rail (Not the Metro-you would have to transfer) all the way down to, presumably, PAXRVR?

The proponents are always touting that we can use the existing rail right-of-way that parallels Rt 235 all the way to Waldorf. However, the last few times I have driven that, it is apparent that there has been alot of encroachment over the years. There are dozens of roads and driveways that cross-over the old rail bed and many houses are located very close by.

How can traffic possible be controlled where the roadways pass over the rails? Are they going to install automatic gates at every driveway? Are people going to tolerate the noise? How long until a tot on his trike gets nailed by a rail? If the trains have to move slow because of the above problems, how is that going to facilitate speedy transportation?

It would seem that paralleling the wide right-of-way for the high voltage power distribution lines would be a more prudent route for a train.

Most Importantly, if you currently drive or take a bus on the Waldorf to PAXRVR route, would you switch to the train? Why or Why Not?

This is going to cost us taxpayers big bucks. I say, if it is a good idea, let's get behind it and push to make it happen. If it's a poor idea, let's raise a stink and kill it.

You have OBVIOUSLY never tried to cross the TJ bridge on a weekday afternoon.
A new span needs to be built, then the current one torn down and replaced. giving us 4 lanes from 235 to Solomons. Whoever was responsible for oversight in the building of the current bridge should be held criminally negligent in the performance of their duties.
A rail system would be nice down here. It would make DC and it's cultural events/exibits much more accesible.

1) Do you think a second span is really warranted now or in the near future? Yes, the bridge is over capacity. There is a two to three mile backup northbound every day. It can only get worse as the area conitnues growing. It is also the only evacuation route south of the nuke plant.

Is a tunnel feasible or cost effective? Feasible yes, cost effective no way.

Other options? How long until the current bridge falls down (Ever notice those big steel bands holding the concrete piers together at the top? They weren't there when they built the bridge.) I doubt that the bridge is in danger of structural failure, and will probably last a long time, but maintenance will get more expensive with age.

I agree with your rail points. I doubt we'll see progress on any rail to St. Mary's within the next 20 years.

The support piers are currently held together with banding straps and the large cracks are filled in with epoxy.
Take a boat ride under there and you'll wonder why it hasn't fallen in the river yet.

 once found out the lady on back seat of the bike was one of those when she tried to climb up my back when we got to the bridge :yikes:

I think the present span of the Concrete Rainbow oughta be totally closed off to all motor vehicle traffic and dedicated to bicycles and pedestrians, and a new 4-lane span oughta be built for vehicles.

They should hire the Loizeaux family and just blow it up, it would be spectacular!

Christmas Cookie Recipes?

Being a pc forum, how's about a Holiday Fruitcake recipe.

Holiday Fruitcake Recipe

1 C Water
1 C Sugar
4 Large eggs
3 C dried fruit
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 C Brown sugar
Lemon juice, nuts
1 FULL bottle of your favorite whiskey

Sample the whiskey to check for quality.

Take out a large bowl.

Check the whiskey again to be sure that it is of the highest quality.

Pour 1 level cup and drink. Repeat.

Turn on the electric mixer; beat 1 C of butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add 1 tsp. sugar and beat again.

Make sure the whiskey is still OK.

Cry another cup. Turn off the mixer.

Break two geggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

Mix on the burner.

If the fried fruit gets stuck in the beaters,

pry it loose with a screwdriver.

Sample the whiskey to check for toxisisticity.

Next, sift 2 cups of salt.

Or something. Who cares? Check the whiskey.

Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.

Add one tablespoon of sugar or something...whatever you can find.

Grease the oven. Turn on the cake tin to 350 degrees.

Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out of the window.

Check the whiskey again. Go to bed.

Who the hell likes fruit cake anyway???

I used to own a house where the property boundry line was the RR right of way. It was clearly marked on the plot and mentioned in the description. If people have built driveways over or built close to it, tuff luck :elaine:

My sister makes it with dried fruit instead of that weird colored candied crap. Kind of like banana bread with differents dried fruits instead of bananas

If I'm about to shell out big bucks in taxes ANYWAY then I might as well back the program that most benefits myself and my community as opposed to those programs that go towards Baltimore.

While they were expanding 235 I always said, "By the time they get this accomplished, they'll have to expand it again!" In fact, if there's a slight glitch in the light system or a minor fender-bender the traffic is backed up like the New Jersey Turnpike.

We need to implement something now that exceeds the 'now' expectations because these expectations are being run over by the time we accomplish them. I think this is a superb idea but I hope it doesn't take 20 years to accomplish.
