Great series. After having the major points of the island hopping campaign drummed into us @ P.I. you really get a grasp on just how monumental a campaign it was.

You (speaking for myself) never really heard anyone talking about WWII vets suffering from PTSD, but The Pacific did touch on it on several episodes which was different from how the stories have been told in the past. What I really found uncanny was the facial similarities between the actors and the folks that they were playing.

Now, to find Eugene Sledge's book, "With the Old Breed: At Peleieu and Okinawa" and give that a read.

Well written addition to this thread... And I agree 100%... I had same experience at PI with the info being pounded into our heads. Makes me proud to have served as a Marine.

I just ordered the book on Amazon... They have several copies on there.

It was no Band of Brothers.
I lost interest after about 5 episodes, and stopped watching. :/

:yeahthat: I watched the whole thing but it was nowhere near the quality of Band of Brothers. Too choppy and hard to follow.

The scene where the googly eyed guy was tossing pebbles, plunk....plunk....plunk, into the blown open skull of the Japanese soldier sitting upright at his machine gun position caused me to have a bad dream

Agreed! That was scary that so many of them looked like the men they were portraying! Great series and I would love to see Spielberg and Hanks do something on the Civil War!

Ken Burns set a pretty high standard when it comes to Civil War docs.

I never watched Band of Brothers so I cannot compare the two. I don't think it piqued my interest because it was about the 101st as opposed to the USMC. Now if there were to be series or documentary about the 2nd Armored during WWII, I'd have to watch that. I still have an organizational flowchart from my grandfather's time over there.

You need to watch Band of Brothers (the book is a good easy read too). The Paratroopers of Easy Company were an elite group that was molded by and uncompromising chickensh1t hardazz and led by one of the bravest guys you'll ever hear about in World War II. Everybody who considers themselves a leader should watch the series.

I hadn't thought about the 2nd Armored Division. That would be a good story too! I used to play a war game (can't remember the name) based on World War II armor units in the European Theatre. Lots of time for action and character development if they were to follow these guys from North Africa through Europe.

It'd be hard to top the powerful effect and rave reviews of Band of Brothers - as it was done VERY well... However, taking The Pacific into account for what it was, I thought it was great.
