This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen and why I'm gun shy about watching recent releases. This POS is nominated for an Oscar.
The plot is ignorant and immature, the special effects are asinine, plot holes the size of the Grand Canyon, the whole thing is just a waste of time and the $6 I spent renting it. But Demi Moore is excellent and is also nominated for Best Actress, which she should win. I was surprised she let it all hang out like that, considering she starves herself and carves up her face in an effort to look younger.
The story is an aging actress lamenting her lost youth, so she takes a potion (the Substance) that basically turns her into two people - a young cutie pie and her real self. Only one of them can be alive at a time (which is negated later when both of them are alive), so they switch off every seven days. This starts to fall apart when the young version decides she likes being alive and doesn't want to switch.
Gross out and nudity - Demi and Margaret Qualley are full frontal naked during most of the movie - replace talent. Supposedly it's a sophisticated dissertation on how Hollywood views older actresses that I'm just not hip enough to get.
Anyway, I just wanted to bitch about this movie.
