Theft Of Freon

the person who i originally heard this from had the st marys police at her house this morning because she went to turn on her a/c and it caught fire. they checked the unit and sure enough it had been damaged and all the freon was gone. police said they have not made any arrests.

Wow, that is awful. Yes, a few in my neighborhood actually had theirs blow up. Is she close to my 'hood? I had never heard of getting high off of Freon. Guess I lived a sheltered life. Our guy was arrested and released and the police officer told me they are working up reports now for further charges.

Seriously? Somebody is such a loser that they'd steal freon to catch a buzz???? That's right up there with the bums that drink rubbing alcohol to get drunk.

I had a friend years ago that tried to get some out of a window shaker by cutting a line inside the unit and huffing it. The freon came out too fast and sprayed all over his chest. He still looks like Freddy Kreuger with his shirt off.

Yes, this happened in my neighborhood. The guy stole our freon which caused our heat pump compressor to blow up and we had to shell out $4,200 for a new heat pump. He pretty much hit every house in our neighborhood. He got caught when a homeowner came home and found him passed out in their yard.

or you could have spent about $900 and just changed out the compressor......

From what I was told.
They put up a sign next to your AC unit.

LOL I guess that didn't sound very smart. I just don't want to find out when it is too late and have to replace my compressor...again. It isn't that old.

Well, some people found rubber gloves next to the unit and valve covers missing or screwdrivers at the units but the biggest tip off was a guy passed out next to the unit.....

Seriously though, we only found out because our electric bill was almost $500.00 and when the heat was on it was blowing cold. When the guy came out we found vavle covers missing and the unit was empty. You would need gauges to test the freon.

Thanks-I will have to keep checking it out. My electric bill has been really high too. I thought it was because my daughter leaves her music and lights on all day.

Yes, I could have done that however the unit was 8 years old and a piece of junk on its last leg and not big enough to support the addition we added so it worked out for the best.

Just wanted to make everyone aware, i just recieved word that in Mechanicsville the police have recieved over 14 reports of freon theft.

suposedly they are using it to huff and get high with.

just thought you all would want to be aware

so when your calling your HVAC guy out there because your A/C isnt cooling, you'll know why, somebody was behind your house huffing.

Thats been a big problem for quite some time.

Now is it just freon thats being stolen? or all brands of refrigerant?

Cant you go to Ace/Wal-mart/Lowes and get the car refrigerant? I know I've seen some quickshot cans there, that'll get people hooked then they start stealing when the money runs out.
