Run on sentences bother me, especially when they are posted by grammar nazis.

I'm not a grammar nazi. Ok, so it is a run on. It's not as blatant as these errors that I'm pointing out. It's just ignorance of the meaning of these words. Where do you draw the line for a run on sentence? There are some shades of grey. With then and than, they're, their, and there-- it's pretty straight forward. Either it's the wrong word or it's not. Simple.

But I guess spelling isn't important.

Alright so I made a spelling error. The difference is I could look back over and see that I did that, and fix it. Now I would bet that almost anybody who does one of these, if you tell them there is something wrong they would have no idea what it was. That is the difference.

Then/than. THEN is an adverb, with several meanings. THAN is not a synonym for it. THEN is an adverb meaning
at that time, next in time, space or order. In addition, moreover besides. Therefore, and in some cases it is a noun.
THAN.
THAN is most often used after a comparative word!
I am better THAN you.
Use THAN when you are making comparisons!
This is the one that gets me. I didn't really know the difference so would use then a few times.. then mix it up and use than a few times. I hope I get it right more then wrong from now on!!

I'm an English major and I don't give a shiyat. As long as the post is decipherable, who cares? See, my reasoning is, this is a public forum. That means, on this forum, there are people from all walks of life with varying degrees of knowledge, life experience and education. Just because an individual incorrectly spells a word, has poor sentence structure, or transposes words, doesn't mean that they don't have something of value to contribute to the threads.

So my two cents, why not enjoy the posts and the information they contain, without worrying over the petty stuff? Starting a thread like this is petty. It is a poor attempt to lord over someone your perceived intelligence level. Once you let that misconception go, then you can type whatever you want without having to worry about your grammar as well.

That's why I type ya ya'll yonder dat and love to use.....

Next time you see a person misuse then/than/there/their, try reciting this:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change."

It works a lot better than condescending posts that criticize meaningless grammar errors.

What annoys me is when people use "seen" instead of "saw", as in "I seen Bucky down at the Brass Rail last night, and then I seen him again this morning at Wal-Mart."

That bugs the crap outta me.

I think everybody knows what THERE means, despite its many meanings. THEIR is the possessive form of THEY. Meaning something that belongs to THEY. THEIR house.
THEY'RE. This is a contraction of the two words THEY and ARE. THEY ARE stupid idiots becomes THEY'RE stupid idiots.
Moving on.
Then/than. THEN is an adverb, with several meanings. THAN is not a synonym for it. THEN is an adverb meaning

Thank you for listening. I hope we can all at least look forward to more grammatically correct posts than we've had before. Then everybody can be happy!! I know people can learn! They're not stupid, its just that their intelligence is not the prize pig, if you know what I mean. There.

To a certain point, I agree with you. However, if there is a choice to use proper English with correct usage and punctuation, then why not use it? Why not speak or write intelligently?

Getting your point across is much more effective when done correctly, than when someone has to decipher a poorly written or incorrectly written post.

It was an informative post. And it's already clarified things for a few people. And probably for more that haven't posted.

That one turned out proper--so I have to wonder, did you simply not catch it, or did you think it was then and change it to than?

Anyway I know people are less educated that's why I'm trying to teach them a simple lesson. Sure, they will make fun but I think secretly they will take note.

yep, they took note, that's for sure. As indicated by the little red dots below your name.

edit: Nevermind about the color!

While we are nitpicking common mistakes, let me add my pet peeve. That strip of grass in the middle of the highway? It's not a medium. It is a median.
