I've never heard them here in Southern Maryland. I thought they were more mountainous - hardwood and surrounding fields type of birds.
Are You sure it's a Whip-poor-will Whip-poor-will, Identification, All About Birds - Cornell Lab of Ornithology? I have had a Chuck-wills-widow Chuck-will's-widow, Identification, All About Birds - Cornell Lab of Ornithology outside most nights for a week. Had to look it up last year when i noticed the difference in their calls.
I am no bird expert so I don't know the difference in the calls, so it could be either one. :shrug: Either way, the suckers are LOUD and persistent.
