Thinking of crossing

I have an Acer, kind of a cross between a netbook and a laptop. It's the size of an 11.6" netbook, no DVD, 6 hour battery life, lightweight, but it has an Intel Core 2 Solo processor (U3500) and runs like a laptop. The only thing that is really underpowered is the graphics card, an on-board Intel chipset. It's really obvious when I run dual displays.

Gotta remember that you're not stuck with the laptop as-is. You can always put a USB expander on it and add a large monitor, full size keyboard, mouse, etc...... and then lose that when you want to go mobile. As long as the processor/memory/hard drive is up to speed for whatever you require it for.

The Acer trades off decent speakers for the dedicated graphics card it seems. Only 1 left channel speaker on what seems like a pretty capable machine. I'll look harder into the ASUS machines. I'm not a gamer so the Intel card should be enough for me to do what I need, besides, I'm thinking a dedicated card would burn more battery than an integrated one. I know that Alienware's 11" machine will shut down its graphics card to optimize battery life.
Yes, I have gamer ASUS laptop with dedicated graphics card, and got my daughter a mid-level ASUS with integrated graphics, and the same sized batter for both, her's last 3-4 longer than mine.

I can't tell a difference in graphics, I'm sure if we loaded high end games and compared, we would, but never did it.

maintaining a web page is mostly text coding ... or are you talking about using Photoshop for modifying pics

If you intend to use the PC as a laptop, i.e. use the built-in display and keyboard, the small size of the netbook means a small keyboard and display, NOT the best for typical laptop use.

If your use and desires are easily met by a small screen and keyboard, then the super portability of the tiny size and long battery life, plus low price is an advantage.

But, I would get quickly annoyed trying to work a spreadsheet, even a long word document on a netbook. I want to do a lot web browsing, I much prefer a typical sized laptop.

On the flip side, the 16.5" to 17" tend to be clunky and more difficult to lug around, for very unnoticeable increase in screen size. Likely this is why 15.6" is the most popular size right now.

If you have a 64bit architecture, Windows Home Server v2 (Vail) is in beta, you can download a copy for free and run. But its based on the latest windows server OS, which means it can't run on anything 32bit.

I have a server in my basement, put together some left over parts, first used WHS v1 beta, till that ran out, then ran Amhi (Linux), then switched to WHS v2 beta, which I'm currently in.

The problem has been resolved and I'm actually pretty happy with the rig my LW got for me. It seems like a pretty capable machine but I've only had it for less than a week.

:yay:

But I have to say, every time I see the thread title, I picture you in high heeled shoes and a dress. Glad it wasn't that kind of crossing....

You don't get off that easy, lets hear the details? Make/Model/Processor/Ram? You got the 64 or 32 bit OS?

Samsung RV520 4GB/500GB, i3 processor, Windows home premium 64-Bit. The screen (I think) is Samsung's Super AmoLED which is the same thing they put on their cell phones. I need to tweak the color settings some and get myself used to using a PC again.

Samsung has a great rep for their products, I don't know anything about their laptops, but if it is half as good as their other products, I'm sure you'll be very pleased. Congrats, I'm sure it will make you happy.
