This cannot possibly be true

Wasn't it during his administration that MLK became a target of the FBI?
Yeah, but - I can't pin that on Kennedy, who, while not determined to pursue Civil Rights, was mostly on MLK's side. He gave him political advice, because he wasn't an idealist.

No, all that - that was Hoover. *HE* hated MLK. Until Hoover *DIED*, the FBI was his personal entity, and no one dared to mess with him.

When you don't read or study history...

A people become miopic and thus the only "greatness" they "know" is from their own generation. Thus when schools rewrite their history classes and it becomes "Social Studies"...we learn more about Irish washerwomen and the underground RR instead of Andrew Jackson and Abe Lincoln.

Then a poll goes out to a generally uninlightened public who can't see very far past 1960 and they can't reference any great decisions,..wisdom..true leadership from 6 previous generations....and the result is....duh.

TR: Boosted national parks & preserves
opened the door for the Panama Canal
Established guidelines for safe food handling
Promoted expansion and diplomacy with clout.
Sent our Navy on its first world tour despite a subtle Japanese threat.
Told Wall Street bullies to pack sand when they wanted beneficial policy decisions
Authorized Naval improvements
Threatened to kill a radical Moslem leader for kidnapping
Pushed the Republicans into a more progressive philosophy yet retained its conservative roots.
Loved his Family dearly and never strayed
Was unashamed of his Christian faith
Entered office after a tragic assassination and kept a stable hand in crisis.
Broke several monopolies
Brokered a peace treaty between Russia and Japan
Restrained legal immigration from Asia
Faced down some icons in congress.

This is just a partial list from 6 years as President.

That's not a very powerful President if he can't even control his FBI. I understand that Hoover had all the dirt and was not shy about threatening people with it, but JFK should have stepped up to the plate on that.

...Hoover had the dirt on Kennedy; mob ties, daliances and the bigee; he knew how bad JFK's health really was.

Hoover had the FBI for forty years - and NO President stood up to him. NO one.

This would be why people with a lot of baggage shouldn't be elected President - they can be bought and blackmailed.

That would pretty much kill off any politicians running wouldn't it?
