Seems like putting an air cooled engine into an semi-enclosed space would cause problems.

Couldn't tell you about the new ones, but the old VW's had air cooled engines and they didn't seem to work to bad

oooppppssss.....I'm a girl, I'm not supposed to know these things

They worked well, but they were designed so air would flow over the engine. They only put out about 50hp on 4 cylinders too.

I didn't say they were fast....just that they worked

I was pointing out that they weren't trying to squeeze a lot of hp out of the engine. Lower compression etc, means less heat produced. Four cylinders meant less mass in the pistons and easier cooling also.

The VW's had an oil cooler.

I have seen police Harley's with a fan mounted to blow over the engine. They idle a lot while the police are in the donut shop I guess. Maybe this fellow placed a fan in there.

I don't remember an oil cooler. Other than the oil pan and I don't even think it had fins. Of course I only had my engine out 3-4 times.

I think Imno meant an add-on oil cooler. There are a few aftermarket oil coolers for V-Twins.

As for the Crosley, the builder's home pages shows how he modified the hood with air-intakes and added oil temp returns and a fan to cool the engine.
