Thomas Johnson bridge and biking

I am planning a bike tour of Calvert & St.Mary's Counties. My questions are about the bridge connecting the two counties. MDDOT has very little info.

[1] Is biking over the bridge permitted?

[2] If so, is there a dedicated lane for bikes or a sidewalk for pedestrian traffic?

[3] If not, are there taxi services for bikers?

[4] What is the bridge span in miles? What is the posted speed limit?

[5] On weekdays, is traffic light or heavy during non-rush hour periods?

Any other comments, info, appreciated. Greetings from College Park.

[1] Is biking over the bridge permitted? Yes, but it would be stupid

[2] If so, is there a dedicated lane for bikes or a sidewalk for pedestrian traffic? No, that's why it is stupid.

[3] If not, are there taxi services for bikers? No

[4] What is the bridge span in miles? 2 What is the posted speed limit? 45

[5] On weekdays, is traffic light or heavy during non-rush hour periods? Not too heavy, but there are lots of big trucks at high speed.

Answers in red. Since there is no shoulder or sidewalk, the only place to bail out if a car gets too close is over the side and 120 feet to your death. Not a good idea. It would not be a smart thing to do.

Best bet would be to call a taxi service and have them send out a van to cross over. Or try to get in contact with one of the local bike shops for the van for you maybe...

or draft an old lady in a buick
That would be my Mom! :lmao:
We used to do that on I-8 across the desert. Worked really well, but you really had to be really close. At 80mph it made you a little nervous.

MMDad -- thanks.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like a good idea to bike across.
Unfortunately the Bennedict bridge isn't much better for bikes, just not as far to fall if you get nudged over.

I've been at work a few times when we've gotten traffic complaint calls for joggers on the bridge. Goddamn nuts.

I almost hit a pedestrian on there about 12 years ago. The next morning the news said he did get hit, just not by me. Stupid bridge to try to walk over.

Dustin -- sounds like the best idea. There's a number of outfits at the Bay Bridge and the bridge from Cecil Cty into Havre de Grace that are set up for people like me. Time to make some calls.

Not brave enough to try out desertrat's ideas, LOL.

It says something like "not advised."

I think that means "we'll launch a boat and try to find your body, but you'll probably have to wait a few months until you wash up at point lookout."
