During my first deployment to Sicily we would be medivac'ing about one person a month to Naples, mostly kids who would be out digging around in the dirt and find some WWII munitions that would go off.

I would agree with the "toy" being a bomblet as all grenades that I know of ignite with a delayed fuze that emits a good bit of smoke before the thing explodes, and most people know that a ball that starts smoking probably isn't a ball. Of course, there are exceptions like Max Cleland who says he got blown up when he dropped a grenade when getting in a helicopter (while drunk) and didn't realize it was armed. You gotta be pretty blitzed to not recognize an armed grenade that's smoking like a chimney.
