I tried every remedie for my lil one, who is now 16. And she STILL sucks her thumb when she watches TV and sleeps. Her teeth are absolutely fine!

Yeah, I know.......16.........come on, I'm ready for the stupid comments! :lalala:
Put a rubber band on her wrist. Come by and snap every time you see it. She'll get the hint. :yay:

My daughter is six and still sucks her thumb. I do not know what to do now that she is losing her baby teeth she needs to stop. I have tried positive reinforcement, no luck, I took her to the dentist and he said he may have to put a device on her permanent teeth to break the habit, costly at that!!!

Any suggestions??

Perhaps you should address the child's insecurity issues. :yay:

thumb sucking is not necessarily an insecurity issue, could be just habit
my husband was a thumb sucker till 7yrs old and his front teeth are straight, no braces needed. are her teeth coming in crooked?

a friends child recently had to get a guard from the dentist,
it's costly but does work

soon she's going to get worried what the other kids will say
perhaps time is what's needed

when my daughter was a baby if i caught her sucking her thumb i replaced it with a pacifier - i figured i could take that away later if necessary

Try gloves, She won't want to suck fabric all day long, or if she really wont quit, work around it, If her teeth start bowing out because she's sucking her thumb, have her spend 15 minutes a day putting slight inward pressure on her teeth, she'll stop pretty quick, no kid i know is willing to go to that much work a day just to suck a thumb.

I'm curious as to how old these kids were when taking off the bottle and/or pacifier. I'm either brilliant or extremely lucky. My nephew was allowed a pacifier until well after he turned two. When it was finally taken he replaced it with his thumb. I took both of my kids pacifiers when they started getting teeth (If they needed to suckle they got a bottle of water) and took the bottle away at a year old. Neither has ever sucked their thumb.

My rule is that you lose the binky and bottle as soon as you can walk. Worked for both of them. :yay:

took the pacifier at 12mo. - she went to sleep without it one day so i figured she didn't need anymore, didn't have any problems

bottle was harder - 18mo. - i took away on friday and by sunday she was ok
my husband happened to be going out of town figured that would be best time to do, he'd have given in but i just let her fuss it out

Thanks for all the responses. I will use all that I can until this is conquered!!! She had a pacifier until 2 years old, then she watched rug rats and the kid that sucks his thumb....started that day!

My daughter is a very inteligent young lady, who is receiving highest honors in school, play sports, and is surrounded by a wonderful group of friends, and has an adoring family. She does not have insecurity issues thank you very much. She is not an over acheiver either. She is book smart, artistic, friendly loving and an all around great kid. I honestly should have known better to say something about this issue. There is absolutely nothing wrong with thumbsucking and I'm sorry that some of you wish to make this a mountain out of a mole hill, and make it "dirty" for your own enjoyment.
