I still tip a couple of dollars at places like Golden Corral. Even though they don't do a whole lot. It's just the nice thing to do.

Me too. That $5 doesn't really mean much to me, but it's a nice surprise for the table person.

I get annoyed with people who calculate a 15% tip - before tax. It's like, just leave that girl some money. What do you care about that extra $3? :smack:

Exactly. If $3 or $5 makes that much of a difference, they probably shouldn't be going out to eat.

I think I've told the story about how my Dad, who is a notoriously bad tipper in the first place, realized that the restaurant added in a 15% tip, so he went back, chased our waitress down, and made her give him back $3 of the five he left for breakfast for seven people.

Larry went back after him, apologized and dropped her a twenty.

When I go out to dinner with him and my Mom, I either insist on paying or I conveniently leave something behind so I can go back and take care of the server. And they have money! They're not poor or living on a fixed income! And yet they think leaving $2 on a $50 check is more than enough.

It's different in other countries. I was rather surprised at the reaction I got from the bar waitress when I left her a nice tip.....on my first trip working in South Korea. ;-p

Oh my goodness. That's crazy.

I usually baseline at 20%. It's easier. Whatever the final bill is, I move the decimal to the left one place and times it by two.

Japan is the same way. I was told to only tip if there happens to be a tip jar.

It’s generally considered an insult if you leave a tip in countries where restaurant service is actually a professional career. Their assumption is that you think they are poor and need additional financial assistance. That’s not the case at all.
