Tipping in the United States has gotten out of control

And I HATE when I give them cash for my bill, and they ask if I need change.

Yes, yes I do

If I want to give you the change as a tip, I will tell you.
Or they don't even bother to come back with your change. We were at Howard Theater for dinner/drinks comedy show a few years ago, 3 couples, separate checks. Friends owed $48, gave the waitress $100 bill so they had change to tip. After waiting for 20 minutes, friend went looking for the waitress, took him 15 minutes to find her and get his change. No tip for you!! FYI, show was terrible, food so-so, service horrible..will never go to anything there again.

For your consideration ...

This shows that all are not welcome. Why would anyone want to go to this place nowadays?

Worked at numerous stations through the 60s, never saw a tip to me or anyone. And yeah, washed windows, checked the oil, tire pressures..etc. Was making min. wage or above.
:yeahthat:
With me this was in the mid to late 70's. It was a full service though and gas was $.03 to $.05 per gallon higher than self-serve. Boss said that's what paid my salary.

A lot of the charter fishing boats now have a sign that says 20% tip is customary. Or something close to that. What gets me is the % is numbered, not just tipping the mate is the norm. And with the increase cost in fuel, trips are nearly double what they were 3 years ago. So after paying $2,000 for an 8 hour off shore trip, they want you to drop another $400 or more on the crew.

I understand that they work more than the 8 hours that I hired them for. My last ocean trip had a single mate. I assume he got the entire tip. I don't know if he got any of the fare as part of his wage. We lost a lot of fish due to busted lines and other tackle failures. I don't know if we hooked really big fish or they didn't take good care of their gear. Anyway 8 fish landed in 8 hours. Not the most productive day. But that's how it goes sometimes. Sure the mate works hard but is it $50+ an hour hard?

This is where I have a problem and I've said this on here before - If wife and I go out to a local restaurant for dinner and the bill comes to $100 and I tip $20, then the waiter/waitress is making $20/hr just on our table (we are not in there much more than an hour most times). If they have 2 or 3 additional tables, which many do, then they are bringing in $60+/hr. That's way too much money IMO for waitstaff. Even if they are sharing with busboy/hostess, they are still probably getting $30/hr or more.

Know a few folks that were bar tenders and waitresses that retired in their early 50s.

See, and the right server can make my night. I wish those people made a million $$$ so they'll be there always to serve and entertain me. But I feel that way about the guy at the guy store who guides me in the right direction without being a jerk. Hardware store guys - you'd all be millionaires if I had my way. The guy who helped me get my perfect car a couple weeks ago. The guy who refurbished our deck.

It's the lawyers and politicians I'd impoverish. Those dicks would be on the bread line if they had to work for tips because they're all worthless suckage.

The person who brings me drinks and food is worth WAY more to me than some ahole politician. Our gal at the resort who picks up the trash twice a day - worth WAY more than any bottom feeder politician. If she misses one day we all notice; if some politician goes AWOL for months nobody cares.

Several years back I was at CIP. After paying cash for my meal, the waitress brought me my change in bills, but not the coins. Even after I asked for them. Those few coins ended up being her tip. That happened twice there.
Happened to us there one night.
