DirecTV "had" a Tivo branded DVR and now they have a model of their own. From what you are explaining you do have a Tivo. Unfortunately DTV doesn't offer this anymore to new customers. As far as fees go DTV charges a fee for DVR capability (5.99) and then you pay an additonal 5.00 for extra recs, now this fee you pay for Tivo or non tivo's. I personally have 4 DTV Tivo's all capable of recording 2 different things at once. I went the extra mile and networked them so I can watch things recorded in other rooms no matter where I'm at in the house.
If you have Metrocast you can get a DVR from them but it will cost you around 10-15 a month. Then if you decide to have more than one your cost will go up 10 more ea. Its cheaper for me to pay cable modem at 40.00 and DTV with 4 Tivos than it would be to have 2 DVR's on cable.

We have to BUY the box for each place we use it - we have one in the bedroom, one in the family room and one in the TV room (because we haven't figured out a better name than TV room). One was for Bluejay's birthday, one was for MINE, and one was for - well I guess the dogs' birthday.
In each case, it REPLACES the box we were using for the TV and it costs 5 dollars per box. I guess we're paying for the service at that point, because we own the box itself. But it's the same price per box.
We did have to have a new multiplexer installed to give us more lines from the satellite, but I still haven't figured out if we pay more for the lines or not. My guess, is, we don't.
